The most important single advance in modern navigation was the development by the English horologist John Harrison (1693–1776) of the first accurate marine chronometer in 1761; on a voyage from London to the West Indies, this specially constructed clock accurately determined the ship’s longitude.

In 1761, John Harrison invented a pocket watch accurate enough to use for navigation at sea, which lost only 5 seconds in 6 and ½ weeks. This tiny watch has demonstrated the power of a small watch.
