Actually, Cornwallis was claiming indisposition, and sent General Charles O'Hara to surrender for him. O'Hara first offered his sword to General Rochambeau, commander of the French troops, but Rochambeau shook his head and gestured to General Washington. O'Hara extended the sword to Washington, but Washington had given the honor of conducting the surrender to General Benjamin Lincoln of Massachusetts. Lincoln had been taken prisoner at Charleston, and not allowed to march out his men at that time. Washington now allowed Lincoln to set the terms of surrender.
