In Dutch or Flemish, what does 'Ge zijt nen engel' mean?

Question #98242. Asked by author. (Aug 03 08 3:38 PM)

    Squisher

It's part of a campaign for citizens to behave on public transit -- something like behave like angels.

    Flem-ish

This campaign was launched as a reaction against a number of incidents in public transport. Ge zijt nen engel is typically Flemish and not Dutch. It's a perfect example of tussentaal.
"Ge zijt" is archaic for "Je bent", something a normal Fleming will never say. "Too Dutch". "Nen" for "een" is a dialectical form of the article. Only "engel" would occur in real Dutch, but as an idiom it's not Dutch either. It' s the Flemish way of saying: "You are being sweet". But mind..these linguistic forms are close to Middle Dutch.
