Do Brussels sprouts come from Brussels?

    Question #98352. Asked by star_gazer. (Aug 06 08 8:58 PM)

    BRY2K

A 'well I never' fact about Brussels: Brussels sprouts are so called because they were first cultivated in Brussels in the 18th Century.

Forerunners to modern Brussels sprouts were likely cultivated in Ancient Rome. Brussels sprouts as we now know them were grown possibly as early as the 1200s in what is now Belgium.

The modern Brussels sprout that we are familiar with was first cultivated in large quantities in Belgium (hence the name "Brussels" sprouts) as early as 1587, with their introduction into the U.S. in the 1800s.

The Germans have a much nicer name for them. "Rose-cabbages".
