    What is 'glitterati'?

Question #98387. Asked by author. (Aug 07 08 8:05 PM)

"Glitterati" is a portmanteau word combining "glitter" and "literati," the latter meaning highly-literate, well-read people, such as authors/critics/scholars. The term refers to elegant, "glittering," fashionable celebrities, who may mingle with the "literati":

Pink Floyd uses the word in this "Final Cut" lyric:

And now, adding colour, a group of anonymous latin-
    American meat packing glitterati.
