In this day and age of instant replay video recording, why are court stenographers still necessary?

In fact, there has been some debate about this in recent years. Some courtrooms do use electronic recording equipment, and some people feel that it's more cost effective and more accurate than a court reporter can be. Other people feel that providing a written transcript in response to jury requests to review testimony is preferable than giving them video/audio recordings, which might also pick up conversations jurors are not supposed to hear.
There are other issues as well. This New York Times article was published some time ago, but it explores the plusses and minuses of both recording methods. My guess is that electronic recording is the wave of the future:

I have been told that the Judge uses them to strike certain pieces of testimony from court documents.

Although eletronic recording is were the future is headed, I see many advertisements for starting a career in this profession.
