Women's boxing appeared in the Olympics in 1904 as a demonstration sport but was banned by most countries for much of the 20th century despite the popularity of men's boxing.
Colorado Springs-based USA Boxing didn't recognize female boxers until 1993. It held its first women's national championships in 1997, four years before the International Amateur Boxing Association sanctioned the first women's world championships.
In 2005, the International Olympic Committee executive board rejected women's boxing for Beijing, saying the sport had not "reached the stage where it merits inclusion." Open-water swimming and women's steeplechase were approved for Beijing.
Chances are the boxing association will reapply in 2009, seeking to make women's boxing part of the 2012 London Games. If women's boxing is accepted, several men's boxing weight classes might be eliminated to meet the IOC's cap of 302 medal events across all sports.
