In 1946, a man opens the curtain to enter his Pullman Car berth and is startled to see a cat, sleeping with its head and left paw showing above the covers. What railroad is he riding on and what is the name of the cat?

Well, the description fits "Chessie," the mascot of the Chesapeake and Ohio, used in much advertising, but from 1933. Could this be what you had in mind?

I think the railroad is C&O, and the cat is Chessie.

Right; I actually got the question from a Charles Adams cartoon in the New Yorker Magazine of the period.
