He played the audacious character Bill Doolin in a western movie, but in real life he was a real hero, too. Captain Jamie Waring, who demonstrated that in the high seas there is only one thing to try on (power!), was played by another real high flying hero. Who are they and what makes them extraordinary?

In the 1942 swashbuckler film The Black Swan the role of Waring was played by actor Tyrone Power. In the 1981 movie Cattle Annie and Little Britches the role of Bill Doolin was played by veteran actor Burt Lancaster.
On notable personal achievement of Power was the fact that he he flew cargo and wounded Marines during the Battle of Iwo Jima and the Battle of Okinawa.
As for Lancaster, he was one of the Hollywood movie stars, along with Marlon Brando, Sammy Davis Jr., Charlton Heston, Sidney Poitier and Paul Newman, who participated in Martin Luther King's March on Washington in August 1963. He flew home from Europe, where he was making a film, to participate. He was a financial supporter of King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Bill Doolin has been played by at LEAST four different actors, but I'm guessing that you're referring to war hero Audie Murphy. As for Jamie Waring, he was played by the knock-out gorgeous (*swoon*) Tyrone Power, Jr. in "The Black Swan." Power did serve as a pilot during World War II.

Yes, you are both right on Tyrone Power. However, only Frankie got it right on the ( audacious ) Audie Murphy who played Bill Doolin in the Cimarron Kid ( 1952 ), and who was one of the most decorated soldiers of World War II. Tyrone Power was a First Lieutenant in the Marine Corps during the same war and participated in air support for Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was awarded three medals for his service during the war.
