After Christmas, what is the biggest retail spending time in the United States?

    Question #98581. Asked by star_gazer. (Aug 14 08 4:32 PM)

I'm going to guess that it's the "Back-to-School" shopping season, which is certainly when my family spent a lot of money, on clothes and supplies. I see college students now weighed down by the cost of books. (Think: "Reserve Reading" in the library.)

But sales may be a little flat this year:

Back-to-school purchases from July through September, retailing's second biggest season after Christmas, this year may climb 1 percent to $38.5 billion, according to the ICSC. That would be the slowest growth since 2001, the New York-based trade group said.

Back-to-school shopping is more than an annual marketing event: it typically marks retailers' second-largest season after Christmas. An estimated 75 million kids and young adults are heading back to school this year, but multiple consumer surveys show shoppers are paring back spending plans.
