Hired to care for the child of a struggling artist, she stayed on to nurse the artist himself who in later years found enormous success despite infirmity. From humble beginnings, she is now immortalized in numerous canvases, here feeding a baby, there bathing naked in the dappled sunlight. Her ward became a filmmaker. She married far up, becoming the bride of a wealthy man and living in Beverly Hills. Who is she?

    lanfranco

This is Gabrielle Renard, who was hired by Pierre Auguste Renoir. Her ward became the director Jean Renoir. Both Gabrielle and Jean are mentioned in my quizzes, the Renoir Painting "Gabrielle Wearing a Necklace" in the latest one.

A controversial contemporary artist has recently created a work using an item of 18th-century origin and has taken its title from an exasperated question asked by his mum. Should he find a buyer at the asking price, his creation will become the most expensive work of art by a living artist ever to be sold. An eccentric ruler, who might have preferred a stola to a toga, had his reputation blackened after his death. One story claimed that he had dispatched certain dinner guests via an unusually fragrant form of execution, a tale eventually immortalized by a once-admired painter who was later declared by a famous critic to have been the worst artist of his medium and era. Who was the ruler, who was the artist, and can you find me an illustration of that painting?

At 18, I was injured in a bus accident that left me with a crippled foot and in pain for most of my life. During my recuperation I taught myself to paint, and frequently utilized graphic images to depict my physical and emotional suffering. Married to a fellow artist, I only had three exhibitions during my brief lifetime, at the last one, in my native Mexico, I was carried in on a stretcher. In 1995, 41 years after my death, one of my paintings sold for more than $3 million, the second-highest price ever for a work by a female artist. Who am I?
