I believe you are refering to Princess Diana who was killed in a car accident.

Ok, now this probably is the answer too, cause it was well watched, but the one I am thinking of was an American girl.

Rachel Joy Scott (August 5, 1981 - April 20, 1999) was the first victim of the Columbine High School massacre, which claimed the lives of 12 students and a teacher, along with the two perpetrators, in one of the deadliest school shootings in United States history.

Rachel was buried on April 24, 1999 at the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Her funeral was televised, and it was the most watched event on CNN up to that point. In addition, over 2,000 people came to the event itself.
