The cause was because Butherich a gothic magister militum in the Roman armyarrested a wagon driver for false accusations of secuding someone. The people of Thessaloniki revolted, trying to free the man. Butherich was killed by the people and the emporer tried to send execution orders but the gothics had already killed many people of the city causing the massacre. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massacre_of_Thessaloniki
