What role was played by the German "Rotkreuz" substances in World War I and why is there definitely no link with a "Red Cross" hospital?

When you translate Rotkreuz into English, it's Redcross, bvut in the sense implied by the question it is the name for substances used in gas warfare.
There is no connection between the two - hence no connection with the red cross, the place or the poison gas - the connection is by name only

The usual name for "the Red Cross" is "das Rote Kreuz". Yet "Rotkreuz" (undeclined adjective in a compound word) occasionally and very unfrequently appears as an alternative. A slightly lugubrious confusion remains possible.
