What difference does it make whether Charlemagne organised the "delocatio" of 4,OOO captured Saxons rather than the "decollatio"?

    Question #98999. Asked by Flem-ish. (Aug 29 08 4:26 PM)

Well, did he want them tortured or beheaded? Or just dispersed?

"Decollatio" means "beheaded," but "delocatio" could mean one of two things: either he wanted them disabled, as in dislocating shoulders or other joints, or he wanted them separated and scattered. On the whole, given the large number of 4,000, I'd say that dislocating that many joints would have been a lengthy and inefficient way for Charlemagne's men to use their time. So, either beheading or dispersal was the way to go, but we're not quite sure.
