How does a certain perceptual theory of psychology involve a jauntily-marked example of Canis familiaris (one seemingly known to antiquity but more popularly associated with ardent public servants), and can you find me a painting by a famed eccentric artist that incorporates the concept?

One of the key principles of the Gestalt system in psychlogy is that of "emergence," demonstrated by a "picture of a dog" made of various dabs on a blank background that the mind construes to represent a Dalmation.

Those ardent public servants really aren't BURNING, but trying to EXTINGUISH flames. Zb may allow me to get away without a reference that shows the association between firemen and Dalmations.

Then again, she may not, so since the same reference that tells of them riding on fire engi... I mean, alongside Egyptian chariots, includes the fireman part, here goes:

Nice, qp. But I need the painting, too.

Speaking of public servants, there are six police cars outside of my building at the moment, and their occupants are refusing to tell me what's going on.

Ah, big city life. So exciting.

    Now, about that painting?

Huh? Painting? I'm just not reading carefully these days.

OK, here's "The Hallucinogenic Toreador" by--who else?--Salvador Dali.

Perfect. Now, I'm not sure what to offer, but a snuffle around the vault turns up a leash with a silver collar, ready to be engraved.

Just tell me what you want it to say.

An eccentric ruler, who might have preferred a stola to a toga, had his reputation blackened after his death. One story claimed that he had dispatched certain dinner guests via an unusually fragrant form of execution, a tale eventually immortalized by a once-admired painter who was later declared by a famous critic to have been the worst artist of his medium and era. Who was the ruler, who was the artist, and can you find me an illustration of that painting?

Created 50 years ago, it incorporates two characters from a visual system of communication. On the other hand, the designer also claimed to have been partly inspired by moment of personal despair that he referred to a searing painting by a great artist, one associated with the depredations and tragedies of war. What is it, what are the two characters, and why was the reference to the painting somewhat problematic?

Sometime in the first century, a certain group of provincials, led by a one-eyed commander, revolted against the Roman Empire. Almost 1600 years later, a great old master commemorated this event in a painting that was ultimately rejected but originally intended for a public building in a European city with reason to care about the subject. Who were the rebels, who was the artist, and what is the painting? (Extra credit if you can explain why the painting was rejected.)
