In a little corner of the world, a saintly man knelt to God and communed with birds and beasts. In my neck of the woods, named after him, that little corner is being recreated. What is it called, and where is the replica being built?

Saint Francis of Assisi devotees attended a special mass service in honor of the patron saint of the City of Francisco at the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi in North Beach yesterday evening.

Following the mass service, former San Francisco Supervisor Angela Alioto unveiled a plan to build a replica of the very chapel Saint Francis rebuilt with his own hands, circa 1208, and renamed "Porziuncola" meaning little corner of the world.

Porziuncola chapel re-created in San Francisco --
Two years ago in Assisi, Italy, Angela Alioto and some friends got down on their knees in the Porziuncola, the little stone chapel where St. Francis found his calling. But they weren't praying. They were surreptitiously measuring the floor of the holy site with dental floss.
