How did the "living room" in a house come to be named?

    Question #99139. Asked by star_gazer. (Sep 03 08 7:59 PM)

    BRY2K

Put succinctly, in modern homes and apartments, the living room has replaced the old fashioned parlor. In the 19th century, the parlor was the room in the house where the recently deceased were laid out before their funeral. This became the more affirmative term "living room" in the 20th century.

A neighbor just told me he was paneling his living room with this deciduous wood, but I thought the name he called it referred to a conifer that grows only in eastern North America. Then I realized the soothing word I was hearing is an adjective that describes two very different trees. The one he plans to use is a confusingly close relative of a tree that joined the genome club a couple of years ago. What is he paneling his living room with, and what conifer was I thinking of?

Known for being associated with a certain World War I fighter plane named after an even-toed ungulate, he also sported a Van Gogh in his living room, and later a piece by an artist whose brother invented plastic soft drink containers. Who is it, what was fighter plane, and who was the second artist?
