It was on WNBT in New York in 1941 for Bulova watches.

TDC is probably thinking of the first commercial on British TV, broadcast in 1955 it was for 'Gibbs SR' toothpaste and featured a tube of toothpaste in a block of ice.

Bulova Watches was the world's first television commercial in 1941. They paid only four dollars to have it shown. Clearly, it was shown to be a great success... Just look at all the commercials now! :-D
