According to "The Book of General Ignorance", the second most deadly creature (as a killer of humans) is the Mongolian Marmot (Marmota Bobak). Here's a picture of some:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmota_bobak
Mongolian Marmots are particularly susceptible to bubonic plague, and all the great plagues that swept through Eastern Asia to Europe originated from Marmots in Mongolia. The estimated human death toll is over a billion.
"General Ignorance" also confirms that:
"Half the human beings who have ever died, perhaps as many as 45 billion people, have been killed by female mosquitoes (the males only bite plants)."
