    		Louis XI! of France was known as "The Spider King" as well as "The Prudent" and "The Universal Spider". The spider epithet referred to his love of intrigue (Oh, what a tangled web we weave). His 22-year reign was marked by political machinations, spinning a spider's web of plot and intrigue which earned him his nickname.
