What city is home to more than 20% of its continent's population?

Question #99807. Asked by SanGermain. (Sep 30 08 1:43 PM)

    Sydney

According the population numbers contained in the sites below, Australia has a 2008 (estimated) count of over 21 million (by the 2006 census, it has just over 19 million) and Sydney has over 4 million. That would make it over 20% of the total Australian population living in Sydney, if we went by the 2006 census.

Sydney, Australia has a population of 4,336,374, while Australia itself has a population of 21,450,000, making Sydney contain 20.2161958% of Australia's population.

Just noticed, though, that the population of the whole continent (including New Zealand, etc.) has 32 million inhabitants, making Sydney closer to 13% of the continent's population.

When I look up population size of a city in the United States for example, I always get something like this: Population - City 519,145 - Urban 3,499,840 - Metro 5,376,285, yet I look up Sydney, population: 4,336,374 is only one figure which is city plus suburbs, or Moscow 10,509,000 only one figure, city plus suburbs. To get the actual population of a US city as per Wikipedia, which figure do I use to give me city plus suburbs?
