What was the latest big cat species to become extinct?

Question #99934. Asked by author. (Oct 04 08 8:30 PM)

As of July 30, it was the sabre-toothed Smilodon, assording to New Scientist: "If the Iberian lynx were to become extinct, it would be the first big cat species to do so since the sabre-toothed Smilodon, some 10,000 years ago." This story suggests, however, that the Iberian lynx has been on the verge of extinction.

I think it will be hard to find a "winner" here: Many species went extinct during Pleistocene about 10,000 years ago, also big cat species. One example is the American lion.
