Hypotenuse refers to the longest side of a right-angled triangle. I don't know if there is a word for the longest side of any triangle.

Roget: They are called that on all of them... although there isn't a hypotenuse on a equilateral triangle, only on scalene and issosceles

I checked two dictionaries and an encyclopedia and they all stated that the the term only applies to a right-angled triangle.

The answer is "the longest side" UNLESS it is a RIGHT ANGLED triangle (which can be an isosceles or scalene) in which case it is called the HYPOTENUSE !
