Río de la Plata
Where the rivers join, it is 48 km (30 miles) wide, and it runs to the southeast growing to 220 km (136 miles) wide where it opens on the Atlantic Ocean, making it the widest river in the world.

Río de la Plata at Montevideo, Uruguay -- Looking out from the tip of the harbor here, all you can see is water -- the flat, endless waters of the Río de la Plata, at this point in its course the widest river in the world. It is some 80 kilometers to the far western shore.
