I can't stand science fiction either! I also really hate most fantasy, although Lord of the Rings was okay. If Harry Potter counts as fantasy, that's another exception..the series is brilliant! Reply #1. Jul 20 07, 1:46 AM |

I really don't like detectives that are full of those tiny scientific details..that being said I usually find something I like in all the other genres. Reply #2. Sep 03 07, 4:49 AM |

I have troubles getting into science fiction and fantasy novels. In my younger years, that wasn't so. I could read them then, but now for some reason I'm incapable of enjoying stories of that genre. Reply #7. Sep 06 08, 12:01 PM |

Political thrillers.. some of them may be good but often the desriptions of political relations are tedious and the mood is a little too "reality" for my taste. Reply #10. Sep 07 08, 11:18 AM |

Yes, I think there is a age limit for sci fi and fantasy! I used to read a lot of it, but now my heart just sinks when I encounter the first character with an unpronounceable name.... Reply #11. Sep 07 08, 11:32 AM |

Romance. I would read the back of a cereal box for entertainment before I will read a romance novel. Reply #12. Sep 07 08, 11:54 AM |

Sci-fi (with the exception of John Wyndham's books which are remarkably plausible - 'The Midwich Cuckoos' is my favourite, followed by 'The Day of the Triffids') and the Harlequin/Danielle Steele type of romance, which is little more than soft-porn, and fantasy ('Lord of the Rings' drove me nuts!) head my list of literary genres I'd rather not read. You can also keep those dreary Russian novelists, too. Reply #13. Sep 20 08, 11:03 PM |

'Yes, I think there is a age limit for sci fi and fantasy!' Agony, I'll have to disagree with you on that one. Not all SciFi and fantasy has unpronounceable characters. I still enjoy reading some of the stuff I first read thirty years ago. Asimov and Arthur C Clarke immediately come to mind. What I don't like, and never have, are romance stories of any sort, but being a beer swilling ex rugby player I wouldn't admit to it even if I did read them. I'm not to keen on westerns either. Most biographies also bore me to tears. Reply #14. Sep 21 08, 12:55 AM |

Romance novels, anything to do with celebrity culture from biographies to Katie's guide to... I have a low tolerance for bandwagon stuff, where someone writes an excellent book like 'The Name of the Rose' and suddenly everyone and his dog are writing historical detective series. For example, the fact that the Templars are now crawling out of the woodwork in innumerable novels. I do enjoy Sci-Fi, but I'm fussy about the quality of the writing! Reply #15. Sep 21 08, 3:40 AM |

I don’t like when you read a political thriller and it’s obvious which side the author is on, so the other is clearly being bashed. Even if I agree with the author, I think the book’s plot should remain objective. Reply #17. Sep 21 08, 1:02 PM |

I can do without Sci-fi, as well as scary books that mess with your mind. Stephen King is a creepy man. Reply #19. Sep 22 08, 2:11 PM |

I can't cope with all the tales of lives blighted by child abuse or abusive partners. I've seen enough victims of that in real life for me to choose to spend time reading about it as well. Give me creepy clowns and manic robots any day. Reply #20. Sep 22 08, 4:40 PM |
