What small and stupid thing has recently gotten your goat?

Mine would be spell checks that never give you the right suggestion for what you want even though you only barely misspelled something.

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

Merged threads that aren't identical. Occasionally the two titles are the same word for word, like "what's your favourite singer/song/band?", but often there is a material difference, not even a subtle one. Merging them obviously kills the thread that's been uprooted and dumped into an existing one, but it usually kills the receiving thread too. Nobody wants to look at a mess.

Those serve yourself desks at Supermarkets. "Unexpected Item in Bagging Area" - yes, you cretin, it's a bag, what did you expect, I'm constantly being nagged to use reusable bags, that's what I'm doing, so you flaming well recognise it or I'll come back with a sledgehammer and set about you.

A nice lady comes over to help - here's an idea, tell your boss to let you open up a proper till instead.

Also, being told by a checkout operator that it would be better for me to go through one of these monstrosities with a small amount of shopping - turkeys voting for christmas comes to mind.

My daughters have prohibited me from even trying to use these devices, can't think why!

My son tries to prohibit me from going into a certain local supermarket I may never have had a good word to say about. Aren't our children wonderful? They don't want us to explode. :)

I just tell them it's revenge for any embarassments they may have caused when they were small, eg, me 8 months pregnant and four year old says "Mummy, I understand how the baby gets out but how did it get in there in the first place?". Oh well, it kept the Post Office queue entertained!

Not to mention bus queues, as you stagger past, trying to think of an answer to the hundredth question in the last hour, and end up gasping the answer hippopotamus to every new question. And my four-year-old standing in the queue to pay, eyeing the cotton wool products, and asking me "Mummy, do you need Tampax this week?" It's part of the job that nobody tells you about - entertaining strangers.

That is funny! My son would hold his breath until we were safely past the "bra section" at Wal-Mart...

dfc4385 Let's see - how about folks who constantly quote that remarkable vehicle of reliability known as Wikipedia! Facts are so outdated! Someone posted that the Miss America pageant is in NJ - hasn't been in NJ for at least 5 years now. Or that it's illegal to buy or sell cabbages in NJ on a Sunday - has anyone told Shop Rite that? Take the time to check the dates please. And remember that facts and situations do change.

dfc4385 Oh - and another Fun Trivia favorite! Is it or isn't it a sport? Who cares! As long as the poster considers it a sport - then it is.

I just looked at new Jersey in Wiki and it says:
re Miss America "The pageant began in Atlantic City, New Jersey and was held there each year in September through 2004 (except for the year 2000, when it was held on October 14).
In January 2006 the pageant moved to its new home and time in Las Vegas, Nevada."

The cabbages are in the "strange state laws" section, so it's really not a matter of being out of date for those. I agree Wiki is NOT the most reliable source, but it is often a good place to start because they reference a LOT of other sources you can go to.

Someone's just posted asking for favourites in the UK premiership, and no less than three American smart alecs have posted the names of American teams. Har har that's really funny I almost laughed.

That should have read four smart alecs but two of them named the same team.

Work is annoying me, I seem to be getting irked at the smallest of things lately, but maybe it is just time to find a new job!

Sherry, some of my best friends are American, and most of them aren't thick at all! I can't tell if the American contributors to the football thread thought they were being funny, or if it was some America-centric protest at the temerity of anyone who would want to discuss a non-American sport. But I'm confident that someone will tell me.

People that think they know everything and don't realise how annoying they are to those of us who know that is just not possible. I don't understand why being nasty makes a person feel less thick-headed, judgemental and mean than the clowns they are insulting..

I actually meant those who posted on the thread, not americans in general... see things don't change on here.... c'est la vie.

Ooh that's a relief.

fleester, yes that is annoying! but what I find even more annoying is people who can't accept other people's opinions, or other people's right to have an opinion. Still, most people on FT have grasped the principles of civilised behaviour: thank goodness.

Here here to that Lesley. Bravo.

OK, how about people who obviously don't know that 'civilised' is really 'civilized' and 'behaviour' is actually 'behavior'!

Now now, before you get your undies in a knot...I'm only kidding!

I would have said something clever about the different sports, but I don't know the difference.
