That's it. Just poems.

To my neighbor
If I Could:

If I could,
I’d try to explain
Just how much
Her smoking affects us;
Those of us who
Just breathe it in
Are at the same risks:
It matters not
That we never do the thing-
It’s being around it
That’s the danger.

If I could tell her,
Then I would say
That she’s too great a person
To be hurting herself;
And if that didn’t
Work, as is probably
The case, then
I would point out
That there’d be
No issue as long
As she used the spots
Designated for smokers:
One in the front, and
One on the balcony-
Inclement weather only.

Tobacco

Tobacco is a filthy weed.
I like it.
It satisfies no normal need.
I like it.
It makes you thin, it makes you mean,
It takes the hair right off your bean,
It's the worst damned stuff I've ever seen.
I like it.

Heroes and Scoundrels, Geniuses and Fools,
all are one as one breaks the rules.
Tall and short, fat and thin,
all are one in the world within.
We seek to be different,a change to make,but with a common birth and fate, T'is a too common mistake.
Eat and sleep,love and hate do we all round and round.
Given the choice of a world unborn,
he chose instead to bear the traitors scorn.
From his chest a hope was given flame,
but stubborness inspired to deadly play a losing game.
His heart,through honesty was given achance,
yet his heart lost out to desires mortal lance.

Change is all around me,
Its smothering presence unavoidable;
And I would be a fool
To not admit that I
Am scared half to death.

Change is all around me,
Leaving me with questions;
Do I embrace it:
Or is a fight
What I want?

Change is all around me,
And more times than I can count;
I’ve been at war within myself;
Uncertain what choice to make:
But in the end,
It’s come down to what
Is within my
Best interests to say or do.

Your head against mine,
It feels so soft,
Your feathers so soft and warm;
One day, I know,
These times we share
Must come to an end:
And I wonder,
How can I bear it?
And then, I think, just don’t
Why focus on the future
When there’s so much love
To be had right now?

It’s not fair to you, not even to me,
To dwell on the days ahead;
And so I’ll just sit
Here right next to you
As you rub your head against
My finger, and
Pepper it with kisses:
For tomorrow, and the next day,
Are a long way away
When I’m sitting with my buddy.

I made an error there: it should say "your head against my finger"

Perception

Perception is
A mother
Who points out
What your
Priority
Should be,
Or a friend
Who speaks
With reason
And insight;
Or even the
Small voice that says,
“Stop feeling sorry
For yourself:”
Perception is
All this and
More, wrapped up
Together to
Give what’s
Most needed right now.

Hindsight

If I had a chance,
I’d go back in time
And rearmange my wording:
Taking out this phrase,
And substituting that.

Why is it that
Only with hindsight
Can we see what
Should have been done?
The minute mistakes,
Those little changes
That would have made
Us feel so much better?
Why can’t we just
Do it right the
First time around
In order to
Eliminate hindsight altogether?

Perhaps we need
The reminders of
What we did wrong,
A sort of catalog
Of “don’t do this;”
Maybe instead
We should start a
List of “do this when”
Instead of “not this:”
After all
So much
Depends upon
The positive.

In You

In you, I find the better part of me;
You gentle all, and purify those dross
Elements of nature myself would be
Without yourself, and nullify the loss.
In you, exalted are all virtues bright,
That in myself grow dimmed and fade away;
The waxing moon that trumps the starry night,
The blazing sun that dominates the day.

In you, there lives the raging fire that died
When this living world took away my spark;
Make you a pyre of all my useless pride,
And burn my proofs against the heedless dark.
In you, one better than myself does dwell:
You give me heaven, when I deserve but Hell.

The Day Will Come

The day will come
When people
Will follow
All the rules,
When they won’t
Cut corners
Just because;
When they
Will do their
Jobs the first time,
Without needing
Someone to
Shove them;
When the world
Will be
In balance.

The day will come
When the thing called
Customer service, or
Customer relations, will
Resurface; or won’t
Be so rare,
One has to
Search so careful
Just to find it.

The day will come
When people won’t
Pretend to be
What they are not,
When things like
Status and prestige, or
What’s “popular”
Won’t define
Every moment
Of one’s existence.

The day will come…

It's About Time

It’s about time
The shipment was in,
The one they said
Would be here
Tuesday or yesterday;
The one the
Manager fought over-
She who shouldn’t
Manage a thing.

It’s about time
Things settled down,
But of course,
With so much in life,
As soon as you win some,
You then lose some:
Such is the balance of life.

Sometimes

Sometimes you just
Can’t leave the past
Where it belongs;
Sometimes the past
Just pops up
Unwelcome, like a
Slap in the face;
Sometimes you just
Gotta confront your past;
For what is the use
Of running from memories,
Of pushing them back,
Of saying “no!
You’re not here!”
SWhy deny
What you’re feeling?
Where it’s coming from?
Then you can deal
The right way,
The best way,
The healthy way,
It may be scary:
But it’s also
The healthiest.
After all, awareness
Is more than half
The battle, and
You’re bound to win
If only you
Stop suppressing,
Repressing, rationalizing and denying.

Distraction

Distraction,
It’s the only
Thing that can keep
A person from
Falling into
The pit of despair
At times of
Stress, of unwanted
Memories from
Days gone by.

Distraction,
It only works
For so long
Before, like a
Plague, those
Sensations, those
Memories, just
Explode inside…
Overwhelm all
Thought, erase
All else from
The area.

Distraction,
It disappears
In the dark;
Can’t be found,
No matter how
Hard one searches;
Is replaced by
Torturous thoughts,
The darker memories,
They won’t let go,
Not for the world:
The only escape
Comes when one
Is too tired
To fight sleep,
When one just
Slips into the
Realm of unconsciousness.

Allergy

Allergy,
The word itself
Like a new
And deadly poison,
Invading every cell,
Destroying everything
In its wake.

I never fully realized
How toxic it could be
Until now, when the knowledge
May or may not help,
Might not make a difference.

Allergy can be
From the outside,
Like grass or pollen,
Or from the inside,
Like smoke—any kind,
Cigarettes, cigars, tobacco, fires,
Even kerosene or heaters.
Certain chemicals,
Or components,
Can trigger
An allergic reaction,
Cause the eyes to water
And the nose to sting;
Or tighten the chest,
Bringing on an
Asthmatic episode.

Whatever the case,
All allergy is
Combined with stress:
As a study has noted,
About ninety percent
Of medical ills
Are direct results
Of that thing
They call stress—
A poison in its own right,
Worse than even allergy.

Fed Up

What do you do
When you’re fed up,
When you just
Can’t take anymore?

Do you act
On impulse,
Just doing what
Seems right in the moment?

Or do you consider
All the possible
Choices, weigh them
For consequences,
Consider all
The things you could do?

Fed up with
People breaking the rules?
What to do?
Is the impulsive action
Advisable? Or would
It be far better to
Wait, to think clearly
Of the best solution
To reach out
To others around you?
Might it not be
Better to check
With family or friends
Before proceeding,
To get others’ opinions
Before rushing ahead?

Fed up with something simple?
Then perhaps it’s all right,
But then again,
Is anything really
Simple in life?
Though it may seem so,
There’s often much
We miss in the
Stress of the moment;
Far better to contemplate,
To reflect, to communicate,
To not rush into anything.
Haste invites mistakes,
Whether wanted or not,
Seen or not.

Orchid Children

I read an article
In a book of science writing
It told of two children:
One named Orchid,
And the other Dandelion.

Now these children
They have descendants
And the Dandelions
Are adaptable,
They thrive in
Any given situation,
Bounce back from
Any trauma, seemingly
Unscathed, unaffected by
What life
Hurls their way.

But the Orchids,
They’re more fragile,
Though they can be
Resilient, like Dandelions,
They require
Far more care,
More nurturing,
More attention,
More love and support.

Orchid Children
Can combat
The same though
Situations, but need
Lots of feedback
Lest they fall
From the path
Of optimism and
Being the positive
Person they
Want to be.

Orchid Children
Don’t want
To be stuck
In a rut,
To feel helpless,
To be miserable,
To feel that
A situation is
Beyond them;
But without the right
Chain of supports,
Without compassion and understanding,
Without trust and patience,
They wilt and die.

Orchid Children can,
Given the chance,
Do what Dandelions can;
It simply takes
Longer to do so.

Quality

There’s a quality or trait
For which I have no name,
I didn’t even know
I had it within me,
Under certain situations,
I might even want to use it,
But now, I feel,
My hand’s been forced,
And I must do what
I must do.

It’s a quality or trait
That seems connected
To morality or ethics,
To compassion and
To empathy;
It tells me what to do,
And that’s doing
What is right,
But, sometimes,
What’s right isn’t
What’s wanted,
It leaves a sour taste
In my mouth.

This quality or trait
Could get me
Into trouble,
For standing for
What’s right isn’t
Always about
What’s popular.

This quality or trait
Sets me apart,
For, it seems,
Not many people
Have it
In a given area.

I know I’m not
The only one
To have this
Quality or trait,
And yet I wish
It were more common,
That I had more
Help than I do.

I’m fortunate enough
To have a mother
Who also possesses
This quality or trait
For which I have no name;
She may not know she has it,
Or even understand it,
But I recognize it
Within her, and
That knowledge is enough.

Frustration

Frustration is
The presence which
Unseen creeps
Into the room.

Frustration
Cuts off
The breath,
Makes one
Limp, lifeless.

Frustration, another
Name for
Disease.

Frustration, it
Tears lives
Apart, rips
Families asunder.

Frustration holds
The key
To everything.
