On this day in 1834 - The so called Tolpuddle Martyrs, were sentenced to transportation to Australia for 'taking an unlawful oath.' In other words for belonging to an illegal trades union. Their treatment caused public resentment and the sentence was later remitted.

On this day in 1743 - The London premiere of the oratorio, "Messiah," by George Frideric Handel. There is a belief that the King attended and was so moved by the chorus, "Hallelujah," that he rose to his feet, starting a tradition which is still practiced by audiences today.
