June 2 -- In 1984 "Operation Bluestar", is launched by the government of India at the holiest of Sikh shrines, the Golden temple of Amritsar. Terrorists were said to be hiding there. Army enters the temple premises and hundreds of people were killed. The repurcussuions of the operations were felt for many months to come, culminating in the assassination of the Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her own security guards (two sikhs) on October 31 the same year.
