tiepolo It was a debate *of* candidates *for* president. Why use two prepositional phrases when a simple adjective will do?

tiepolo By the way, we use "President" in upper case only with a name or in direct address. The fact that it was a "presidential debate, lower case, " gives the clue that neither person had the title yet.

Mr. President, are you....?
I see President Obama on the dais...
It was the first televised presidential debate.

BTW: A season back then was only 154 games
