In order to try and prevent the boards getting clogged by threads that are read by many, but are rarely replied to, please post the interesting little news snippets in here.
This is not meant for major topics that will promote a discussion, but for the little oddities that you find in your local areas.
The first one below is an example. This was originally posted in Animals, but never had a single reply posted.

Please feel free to leave feedback for the site administrators. We will take all feedback into account as we tweak and add new features.
The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

Teacher fired for praying. In New York City, of course.

lesley153 Sounds like the headmaster needs to be fired.

Here's another headmaster who was probably trained at Tesco:

"A Middlesbrough head teacher has asked parents to get properly dressed before the school run. It follows sightings of a number of them still wearing their pyjamas when they brought their children to school."

squidgybop Twisters going around the states? Baddest tornado strikes in a Missouri town? Killer tornadoes not normal?

In the Midwest, we expect tornadoes this time of year, but 2011 has been much worse than usual. There have already been 910 confirmed tornadoes, and the one that struck Joplin, Missouri resulted in the highest death toll since 1950. And it may not be over; we've been told to prepare for another major storm today and tomorrow.

trojan11 Yesterday armed gands sabotaged the mains water supply to the capital, San Salvador, in an effort to force the govt to change their policy of defying and bringing to heel the gangs. The capital is at the moment without mains water. Repair work should be finished by Saturday. Truck loads of bottled water have been convoyed to the city from Santa Ana, in an effort to alleviate the situation.

lesley153 Daver and Trojan - I hope you'll both be OK. And everyone else in El Sal or tornado-land.

Shiningstar7 This has been a horrible week, so many lives that will never be the same again, it's traumatic to see the news. My love and prayers go out to all these people and will do all I can in efforts to help them financially.

I intended to ask a question regarding the severity of the tornados in the U.S. this season compared to other years but it seems Daver has already answered it. I hope you all stay safe and pull through unscathed.

Daver, you mention there has already been 910 confirmed tornados this year. On average, what would be the usual number in a 'tornado season'?

I think we would have seen about 600 so far in a typical year, so we're running about 50% above normal. The worst thing is that this year the most severe outbreaks have been near populated areas. I grew up in Murphysboro, Illinois which was site of the worst tornado in history (see link). That was a bit before my time, but when I was around six years old we had a tornado which killed several people.

It may be as well to lay off the organic salad until the cause of the e.coli outbreak in Germany is fully identified

Basic American history should be compulsory for anyone who wants to be our president.

I feel really ashamed and I want to apologize for those who can“t behave. Such a beautiful city that could attract tourists from all over the world and such a shame. Sorry.

lesley153 Such a shame, but it happens everywhere there are tourists, and everywhere that tourists aren't as well.

The Neil Young who's just died is a footballer, not who you might have thought it was.

Cymruambyth Daver, re your post making it clear that Sarah Palin knows that there aren't 57 states. You're sure about that, are you? With her somewhat tenuous grasp on US history, her confusion about the administrative/legislative/judicial branches of the US government, and her general ignorance about matters of international import, she may be a little shaky when it comes to geography, too

I wonder how much American history any elected official or candidate actually knows. There should be an aptitude test that candidates have to take so the public is aware of how much they actually know. Although I'm sure most of the public, to quote the old song, "don't know much about history" either.

Cym, the only excuse for your ignorance is that you are Canadian. Don't you have enough going on in your country to keep you busy? Turn on a hockey game or chug a Moosehead, and leave American matters to Americans.

Daver, isn't it in Canadians' and other foreigners' interest to be curious and opinionated on American presidential politics? After all we try to control the world militarily, economically, diplomatically, clandestinely and other ways. Surely a leading candidate for president of the country that has it's nose in every other country's affairs should expect criticism from anyone and everyone on Earth. If President Palin wouldn't leave Canadian affairs to Candians, why expect Cym to leave American affairs to Americans? Seems only fair.
