In order to try and prevent the boards getting clogged by threads that are read by many, but are rarely replied to, please post the interesting little news snippets in here.
This is not meant for major topics that will promote a discussion, but for the little oddities that you find in your local areas.
The first one below is an example. This was originally posted in Animals, but never had a single reply posted.

Please feel free to leave feedback for the site administrators. We will take all feedback into account as we tweak and add new features.
The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

mjws, you do realize of course that a sustained diet of Big Macs could be just as bad for you as a one-off fugu dinner prepared by an incompetent, unlicensed chef?

An oddity I picked up on the radio news today

Irems left behind by guests in a Travelodge Hotel over the last year included 3 false legs, a life size cut out of Lenny Henry (British Comedian for those of you who don't know him), a stuffed crocodile and a race horse.

Having just stayed in a Travelodge I can understand that (never again), people are in such a hurry to get out of there that they are bound to forget things.

How about the ICC issuing a warrant charging the President of Sudan with war crimes against his people? I doubt if much will come from this.

They will have to fight their way through his army to get him, I cant see him volunteering to surrender, and I also think it is wrong that they backed down from the more serious but more accurate charge of genocide, which is exactly what Darfur was. According to the Guardian, "Bashir is regarded as a proud and egotistical man who reacts aggressively to perceived slights against him", so this will be a long drawn out process, there is also the possibility he wont recognise what he sees as a Christian court. This dictator, who has deliberately cultivated close trade ties with Russia and China to guarantee their support in the UN, is going nowhere fast.

Here's one that had me really excited, which is rare in these jaded and cynical times, the researcher is a reputable academic, so its not fantasy, the science is sound, and if it is true, would shock the art world and lead us all to a rethink.

A disgruntled 16-year-old was arrested in Attleborough, Norfolk,UK yesterday after police received a call from a man in Montreal. J.P. Neufeld, a student at Concordia University, was in an internet chat room when he read the teenager's threat to burn down his high school! He called the Attleborough police and told them about the threat. The teenager had a can of petrol, some matches and a knife in his possession when police arrested him.

The photo to this news item is a young woman in a wheelchair.

Her husband had been running up thousands of pounds' worth of gambling debts, and had forged her signature to borrow large sums of money without her knowledge. He took out an insurance policy on her life: took her off their motor insurance, forcing her to cycle everywhere: stole a white transit van: drove at her, knocked her off her bicycle, drove over her, then drove off and left her for dead.

She spent three months in hospital and is paralysed from the waist down. He has been sentenced to life with a minimum of 17 years.

I may never complain about my husband again.

My policy states that if it's anything other than natural causes everything goes to London Lighthouse, it guarantees that despite a money grabbing materialistic family one has a fighting chance of making it to old age lol.

I love it! SW Airlines used to have a 'reality' type show, with real customers, airport employees, etc.

And the prize for biggest idiot goes to ...

"The Home Secretary's husband has said sorry for embarrassing his wife after two adult films were viewed at their home, then claimed for on expenses.

"Richard Timney, who is also Jacqui Smith's parliamentary aide, said he understood why people might be angry."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7970731.stm

I bet "people" aren't half as angry as his wife!

C30 Posh part of Bedford?

Btw.....in the days when I was able to claim expenses, 25p per mile if over 20 mile (nothing if under), it would have heartened me to learn that some people would be able to claim "Adult Films" as expenses........entertainment?

I believe that they were billed as something like Additional Services. Don't you just love euphemisms? And don't you feel eternally privileged at being allowed to contribute, out of your hard-earned and hard-taxed income, to the - er - comfort of our leading citizens and their families?
