Practically speaking, talking politics can get a board shut down, and I like this one too much to see it go. :(

Chicago is a "sanctuary city" for illegal aliens. What else would you expect? The federal government refuses to enforce immigration laws, and goes to court to prevent states from doing so.

Daver, according to the story, 30 cases have been turned over. Yes they were arrested. They were also let go and have no incident on their records. In essence, they are letting abusers do what they do with no penalty.

Well, after looking at this story in some depth, here is what really happened. The Shawnee County District Attorney's Office had its budget cut by 10%. As a result, the DA's Office said it would no longer prosecute any misdemeamor cases - not just domestic violence cases, but any misdemeamor cases - in the city of Topeka, unless the city agreed to pay them $350,000 to help compensate them for the budget cuts. The city of Topeka is still free to prosecute those accused of misdemeamor domestic violence if it wants to do so (a vote on the issue is set for next week). In the meantime, if you beat your significant other into a bloody pulp, you have committed a felony and are still liable to prosecution. I don't think Topeka is about to become a sanctuary city for wife beaters, all hype aside.

A Kentucky couple were shoplifting at a Wal-Mart. When confronted they left, leaving their 3 year old and 18 month old behind. They returned about an hour later for them.

Thirty-four states plus the District of Columbia have text-messaging bans. In 31 states and D.C., it is a primary offense, meaning drivers can be pulled over specifically for texting.

Hotel front-desk supervisor Sean May on Thursday was fired from an historic St. Augustine, Fla., hotel for wearing a lapel pin, which breaks the hotel's "personal appearance" rules that bans the wearing badges and pins, Jacksonville TV station News4Jax.com reports.
But May wasn't wearing just any pin: It's an American flag pin, which is why the Casa Monica Hotel's move is sparking controversy in quaint St. Augustine, Fla.

Well I hope they at least gave him the option of not wearing the flag pin before they fired him. We live in a "play by my rules or you don't play at all" kind of society. A flag pin showing you're a proud citizen? I just can't see anything offensive about that.

Have the rains let up in your area yet Trojan?
I have read reports of multiple countries experiencing casualties due to rains and mudslides?

No, BX, thank you for asking, they have not. The alert continues into this week. Roads are cracking up, coffee harvest is becoming a disaster, and now the mudslides are beginning. The rain is heavy and constant, just won't stop.

No, I'll stay where I am, BX. Death toll is at about forty at the moment. Sad to say that figure will rise considerably if the rains don't ease off. 2009 saw more than 400 people killed by mudslides.

A Michigan father, suspected of being drunk, is accused of having his 9-year-old daughter drive him to the store in his van while he sat in the passenger seat, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Shawn Weimer, in a police photo, after his arrest on charges of second-degree child abuse.CAPTIONBy Brownstown Township PoliceShawn Weimer, 39, was arrested after officers, alerted by a 911 call, pulled the van over, Brownstown Township Detective Lt. Robert Grant tells the newspaper.
The girl was sitting behind the wheel in a child's booster seat.
"Are you sure the child's driving, sir?" the dispatcher asks the 911 caller.
"Yes," he replies. "The guy at the gas station couldn't believe it, either."
The daughter told officers her father had been drinking whiskey all night, took her out to drive, and then decided to stop at the gas station, Grant says.
The detective says the girl's parents are separated, and she was with her father for the weekend.
"Very sweet, intelligent little girl," he adds.
On store surveillance video, Weimer brags to a clerk at a service station about his daughter.
"I got a designated driver," he says. "Nine years old. Nine. Dad, drinking. Listen, we're leaving, and she's driving."
At one point, the girl says. "And I parked."
Grant says Weimer was "argumentative" with the arresting officers, saying it was his right to teach his daughter how to drive.
He was charged with second-degree child abuse, a 4-year felony, Grant says.
