In order to try and prevent the boards getting clogged by threads that are read by many, but are rarely replied to, please post the interesting little news snippets in here.
This is not meant for major topics that will promote a discussion, but for the little oddities that you find in your local areas.
The first one below is an example. This was originally posted in Animals, but never had a single reply posted.

Please feel free to leave feedback for the site administrators. We will take all feedback into account as we tweak and add new features.
The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

HM Government have decided to apply VAT (UK Purchase Tax) to all hot, take-away food. Apparently, to be considered 'hot' the food item needs to be above the ambient temperature locally... How on earth is that going to work? Me, I'm going to start carrying a small thermometer!

I just wanted to share this with you all and feel this is the best place to do it. We here in Western Australia have a sad case of a police officer who was transferred to a post in the north of this state where areas are a bit tropical. Unfortunately he was bitten by a mosquito carrying a certain disease (for want of a better description) and he was rendered a helpless vegetable. After a lot of lobbying the State Government finally offered to pay half the proposed expenses for treatment for him in Chicago USA. The rest is being raised by friends with functions etc.

Well finally this past week he was flown along with his wife and brother to Chicago for the treatment. You can imagine their utter amazement and thrill at being greeted at the Chicago Airport by a contigent of wellwishers and hordes of Police and a Police band. They were assured of the full support of the Police force there. What a wonderful show of solidarity and friendship. It just goes to show that there are still some good caring people in this world.

That is truly heartwarming, and hopefully the treatment will be a success.

We are all hoping too Chris because the poor man did not ask to be sent to such a place. What I find disgusting is the dithering around our State Government did before deciding to help a man when they were ultimately responsible for his condition. The $400,000 (half the estimated cost) is chicken feed to them - they would spend that on a Christmas party for the Politicians without turning a hair. But that's what you get when an elite party rules and not sympathetic to the working man.

lesley153 They did take a lot of trouble to "justify" the delay. They had to make thorough investigations, that sort of thing. I can't even tell if they convinced themselves.

No, chipping in half the cost of treatment for an industrial illness is not (in my opinion) the act of a kind and charitable employer: it's cheapskate and insulting.

If you believe that of the current West Australian Govt then you must also believe in the Tooth Fairy, Lesley. They are the worst we have ever had for sticking it to the ordinary man in the street, it is to be hoped they do not survive the next election, but then the public is fickle, and there are lot of people out there who vote who are literally Politically Illiterate.

Greatguggly And people wonder why we don't want government run health care in America. Governments do very little efficiently and nothing compassionately,

lesley153 Believe what, Meg? That they are kind and charitable? Far from it - I thought they had a duty of care, having sent an employee somewhere to catch something nasty, to fund treatment for it. ALL the treatment. Maybe not legally, but morally. Lovely word, morally. Don't hear enough of it now.

The Tooth Fairy is my friend, though.

Rick, I haven't heard anything to make health insurers sound compassionate either: just efficient at making profits. Can't win.

Greatguggly That's true, Lesley, but the big argument for universal healthcare (here, at least) is the humanitarian argument. As if pity for those who can't afford health insurance is anywhere in the minds of the people pushing it. They couldn't care less and anyone who believes otherwise is either ignorant or in denial.

That's their game, the left-wing in this country. They're everybody's advocate. For example, if you (on the right) don't believe that taxpayers should be paying for individual citizens' contraception...you (on the right) hate women and don't believe contraception should be legal at all. Likewise, if you don't believe in govt-controlled healthcare , you obviously hate sick and/or old people and want them to die. We've actually got members of Congress saying exactly those types of things. Then they (on the left) can come riding in on their white horse and save the day. Until they don't need your vote anymore. Their game is to divide....rich against poor, black against white, whatever it takes.

lesley153 Oh yes. I'm sure Divide And Rule is the oldest power play invented. It's used, and it works, from families to countries. Straw man arguments come a close second!

I learnt a new phrase today - the Gish Gallop. Bombard your opponent with lies and nonsense, more than one human being can answer properly, and then accuse him of being a nitwit who hasn't prepared for the debate. Hmm what does that remind me of? Ah yes. The playground.

Let me tell you a true story about Health Care Companies. My late first husband and myself were members of one organisation for over 40 years, 36 as a married couple and each belonged to that same organisation for several years prior to marrying. When we went on the pension I found that the rising costs were too great and I spoke on the phone to one of their representatives and asked didn't they have a discounted rates for long term clients and said that after all we had been loyal to them for so long and now could not afford the $120 a month that it was at that time, out of a small pension. The reply I got was that - "No they didn't allow for long term membership with discounts, and frankly if we dropped out all well and good because now we were getting older problems would arise which would cost them" or words to that affect. This was not some underling replying to me but someone in authority. So much for loyalty and long term membership.

Greatguggly That's awful. The only thing I can think of that might be worse than that is having the underling in the government tell you the same. When the big boys are running the show, all we'll get is underlings. Underlings who resent even having to talk to you. I sure won't be able to gripe to the Secretary of Health & Human Services. She'll be too busy spending my money on new ways to intrude on my life.

Greatguggly I'm not defending health insurance companies but at least you can choose a different one if you're unhappy, or choose not to carry insurance. Can't choose a different government.

Or watch elderly relatives go without needed medical attention because the insurance won't cover it and they can't afford anything else. Or watch them drown in a mountain of debt resulting from one parent suffering a heart attack and the other sudden onset double vision that remains as of yet unexplained. Their insurance covered some, but the thousands it didn't cover are putting bankruptcy uncomfortably close on the horizon. Lovely reward after 50 years work, eh? Or you could just have nothing because your job doesn't offer insurance and you can't afford it. No insurance is not always a choice. Vouchers? Better be a big one since my paycheck (yes, I work!) doesn't go far.

This thread is going way off topic and getting political. It is therefore being closed. To those who derailed it and introduced politics, be warned.
