In order to try and prevent the boards getting clogged by threads that are read by many, but are rarely replied to, please post the interesting little news snippets in here.
This is not meant for major topics that will promote a discussion, but for the little oddities that you find in your local areas.
The first one below is an example. This was originally posted in Animals, but never had a single reply posted.

Please feel free to leave feedback for the site administrators. We will take all feedback into account as we tweak and add new features.
The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

Wow... I'm surorised there isn't thirty or so replies about the child trapped in the balloon... it's not often you hear about a story like this. I hope that the kid wasn't even in the balloon in the first place.

They just found him at his house. No more info yet but there will be updates.

There were quite a few posts about this on the Forum side.

I'm glad he was found, on the ground! Never in the balloon at all, evidently.

I am glad he is OK.

Rayven, how close are you to where the family lived?

I heard the family are storm chasers and where on the reality show "Wife Swap"?

Sal, that is strange the it wasn't noticed before. How big is the book regarding regulations and has anyone tried to enforce that rule in recent memory?

Their house is on the opposite side of town from me.

asgardshill Re "Balloon Boy", the father denies it but Falcon the little boy admitted that the whole thing was a hoax.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33330516/ns/us_news-life/

"During a live interview with CNN, Falcon said he had heard his family calling his name.

"You did?" Mayumi Heene said.

"Why didn't you come out?" Richard Heene said.

Falcon answered, "You had said that we did this for a show.""

If it WAS a hoax, I hope the family gets a bill from every agency that responded AND charges are filed against the parents.

Our local council is charging the British Legion £150 for the cost of advertising road closures on Remembrance Sunday, 8th November. That's £150 for every road that will be closed, and think yourself lucky that you're only being charged the charity rates. A profit-making group would be charged a lot more. Oh well that's all right then.

(I drove home from the town centre yesterday evening, and found that one of the roads I normally use was closed, apparently for road works. There were a load of diversion signs, so I got home in about the same time, and didn't get lost, which made a nice change. But nobody told me in advance. Hrumph.)

asgardshill Thanks, Lesley. That was the link I edited when the story finally popped up. Don't know why it disappeared from my edit.

Happy to be of service. An internet plot to drive us round the bend, clearly.

I've just seen a few seconds of an American policeman on the telly, announcing that the couple would face criminal charges.

He said he had evidence that they did it to make themselves more marketable for a reality TV programme in the future.

Just wondering, is it TV news anywhere else?

Ah,local councils - don't you just love them? Maybe they could have a whip-round amongst themselves and make a small contribution from their 'expenses claims'? And just as a point of interest,I wonder what the salary of the Chief Executive of Bedfordshire County Council is? I would guess at least ten times £150 PER WEEK!

Incidently, our local council has closed half the city centre four sundays out of the last six. Wonder if anyone has had to pay? I doubt it!

The "ballon boy" story is still all over the news. I wish it would go away. Sadly there was a fire in the Park Theater Mall is Estes Park yesterday. The mall was completely destroyed, but the theater itself wasn't damaged. We frequently shopped there and I spent a summer working in one of those stores. It was built in the early 1900's.

" The Independent: Revealed: the town hall staff who earn more than the PM

" More than 1,000 senior town hall staff are being paid-six figure salaries, and at least 16 are earning more than the Prime Minister, a fat cats' rich list has revealed.

" Others known to have been paid more than £200,000 in 2007-08 were:

" Andrea Hill was chief executive of Bedfordshire County Council, and the best paid woman executive in local government. She is even better paid now, as the £220,000-a-year chief executive of Suffolk County Council. In 2007-08, her salary was £187,017. Her total package with allowances and so on was £208,767. "

http://www.taxpayersalliance.com/media/2009/04/the-indepedent-revealed-the-town-hall-staff-who-earn-more-than-the-pm-.html

The article also gives the salaries of the PM and cabinet ministers. Andrea Hill's name appears with six other names.

Miserable news about Estes Park - I've heard you speak about it affectionately a few times. I hope it can be restored.

asgardshill Raygina, I'm very sorry to hear about the fire in Estes Park. I spent several vacations there in the 60s and early 70s, and recall going to that theater several times. I'm pleased to hear that it wasn't consumed by the fire.

The "Balloon Boy" nonsense seems to be banking down a little bit on the local news outlets. Which is just fine by me - I really don't need to see "wall-to-wall" breaking news coverage of every crackpot out there trying to garner publicity.

A man in Virginia was in his house, alone and nude. A woman and child cut through his yard. He is now being charged with indecent exposure. I think his charge should be thrown out and the woman charged with trespassing.

It's a bit old now, but this amused me a few weeks back.
The story about the two drunken louts from Swansea who were looking for trouble?
Insulting and aggressive in the city centre one hot August night, they thought they'd have a go at two transvestites teetering down the road in high heels, sparkly little black dresses and long blonde wigs.

Apologies for the DM link, couldn't find one from the Times. :)
