In order to try and prevent the boards getting clogged by threads that are read by many, but are rarely replied to, please post the interesting little news snippets in here.
This is not meant for major topics that will promote a discussion, but for the little oddities that you find in your local areas.
The first one below is an example. This was originally posted in Animals, but never had a single reply posted.

Please feel free to leave feedback for the site administrators. We will take all feedback into account as we tweak and add new features.
The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

poneke It's the white elephant in the room, Cym.

So big nobody knows what to do with it, how to stop it,how to clean it up....just look away:-(

Hmm, Poneke, that's probably the same reason no one has raised the subject of the financial crisis in Greece and the major protests seen in Greek streets today. Nations cannot live beyond their means any more than individual people can. Debt is bound to catch up with the debtors in the end.

One wonders if Spain, Portugal and Ireland will end up in the same boat as Greece.

poneke Nice comeback Cym:-)

You're right,Greece isn't the only democracy struggling right now. With the average Greek feeling being that the wealthy aren't paying their fair share of tax. Off to start a thread....

Very troubling story from India. Can't believe this goes on in the 21st century:

Unreal. Don't people trading in this much money get some of the same popups regular folks do like "Are you sure you want to buy Billions of this stock".

I guess not all the needed safeguards are in place. A 1000 point drop, like happened to the N. Y. Stock Market today, even if for a short while, can cause huge ripples.

I was watching the news when the market took its dive. Fortunately, my losses are limited by the fact that I have no money, so it didn't affect me. I wonder if anyone jumped out of a window on Wall Street :)

I think it's going to effect evryone and I also think the way the elction is going in the Uk that will effect all the markets as well

It's a hung parliament in the UK, and the markets have taken another dive.

Don't know why they call it a hung parliment here when it should be called a coalition (which is what it is) and everyone works togeather like they do in so many other countries. Instead of argueing they should just forget Party Political points and agree what's best for the Country and get on with it

The 'Markets' would have taken a dive whatever the UK election result. That's how these modern-day Robber Barons make their money - "Rising market, make money. Plunging market, sell short and make even more money!"

Pete - sadly,a true Coalition Government, that puts the interests of the country as a whole first, is not going to happen - ever! Unless we have a truely 'Hung Parliament'.

"Hang 'em High!"

lesley153 Daver, it's very troubling, and it's not confined to India; it's happening all over the world. The only surprise is that the girl seems to have been killed by her mother. It's usually the fathers, brothers and uncles who pitch in to keep the family name unbesmirched by despatching miscreant daughters, sisters and nieces.

Paul, to get "a true Coalition Government, that puts the interests of the country as a whole first" we'd probably need to be fighting in WW3. Some choice.

Believe it or not, Lesley, it is not unusual for mum to have a hand in murders of this sort. We recently had an "honour" killing case in Canada. A young woman, her aunt and her two younger sisters were killed by the older sister's father and brothers and her mother was complicit in the murder. The reason? The older daughter was dating a young man of whom the parents did not approve. Her aunt was supporting her choice and it was held by the murderers that the two younger girls would be unduly influenced by their wayward older sister! The father, the mother and the brothers were arrested and they've been charged with first degree murder. They're claiming it is a matter of religious freedom. Canadian courts will not look kindly on that defence.

Religious freedom? Doesn't the bible say "Thou shalt not kill"? lol

Question mark inside or outside the quotation marks? They both look funny to me and that's why I can never remember.

lesley153 I understand that mother is often complicit, but it's normally in a supporting role. I thought it was usually the men who did the killing.

I am stunned by your news, that four women had to die to preserve the "honour" of the family. I've never heard of more than one woman being killed. And the mother was complicit but I wonder how much of a choice she had. One wobble in her resolve and it could have been five. I also wonder what sort of a life she'll have, after her three daughters have been killed.

We have exempted Sikh men from wearing helmets when they're riding a bike, because they won't go on over a turban, and (I think) from wearing police helmets. More recently, a Hindu man in England fought for the right to be burnt (after his death) in the open air, something which was always strongly resisted - use a crematorium, or have your funeral pyre somewhere it's not illegal - but he was eventually given dispensation for his open-air pyre. We do tend to bend to claims of religious freedom, but there are limits. Mass murder is well beyond these limits.

ALV, it depends which bible you read. Choose your bible according to the answer you want.

I like the Gospel According to Mark!

Me, too, redwaldo. It's short, pithy and to the point, although Mark didn't write it (it's actually Peter's gospel, dictated to Mark), but what the hey!

poneke We humans really do underestimate animals. Check out this amazing dog from Alaska, Buddy :

And he went back to wait for the fire-engine, unbelievable!
