As I type this, CBC Radio Noon is doing an interview with a fellow who is a bartender - and he's 92 years old. He's been tending bar for over 60 years!

Today the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, dealing with the fallout from the Residential Schools system that decimated First Nations communities and culture, is holding the first of 11 National Events at The Forks (the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers) in Winnipeg, a site on which aboriginal peoples lived for over ten thousand years before white contact.

Back to news from Israel, I've heard some disturbing things about some Ashkenazi parents there who are going to jail for refusing to send their child to a school with Sepharadic children on ethinc and religious grounds. Somewhere around 100,000 people demonstrated in Israel in protest of their punishment, but I think that the two weeks they'll be spending in prison isn't long enough. In Israel, it is against the law to not allow children an education in school, for whatever reason. And these parents are teaching they're children an attitude towards their neghbors one would have hoped went the way of the Jim Crowe laws here in the States.

A story in today's Globe and Mail is headlined 'California faces System Failure' and relates the financial and social upheaval affecting California. Makes me glad I don't live there! Can I hear from Californians on FT? How bad is the situation in your state?

California is in a very bad situation. We have very high unemployment rates, high rates of foreclosures, teachers laid off, law inforcement people laid off, early release of prisoners. I don't have any proof, but I think a lot of it is from corruption and greed. Another reason is the influx of illegal Mexicans that are taxing our legal system, medical facilities, schools and welfare system, although they are not supposed to be able to get welfare. I wish that the other states would take Arizona's stance on illegal immigration, but even the persident doesn't agree with Arizona. I hope this isn't too political.

Judy, a friend of mine who spends quite a bit of time - job-related - in San Diego tells me that CA has been living beyond its means for years and that the situation is quite scary. Evidently early release of prisoners - some 150,000 of them is on the agenda, along with closing down 241 colleges. She says it's worse in Southern California than it is in the northern part of the state.

Arpeggionist, that's dreadful. Why are the Ashkenazi parents going out of their way to be divisive?
Slightly alarming delusions of grandeur from OHB:
'US President Barack Obama would be granted powers to seize control of and even shut down the internet under a new bill that describes the global internet as a US "national asset".'

The internet isn't even an American invention. It was created by an Englishman, and it doesn't belong to anyone. It belongs to everyone.

They are pushing for everyone to get on the enternet as just a way to begin to tax its use. Wait and see.

There have been pushes to everyone online here too. I didn't think of taxing. I thought it was so they could keep any eye on us. Nasty either way.

Hehehehe Cym! They definitely are watching me:-) But then I throw in a lot of 'trigger words' when I'm talking on the phone....just to rattle 'their' cage. Whoever 'they' are!
I think the idea of USA claiming ownership of the internet is ha-frikkin-larious. Until I think about Bush and the next time an idiot like that gains power....Shudder!

Cymruambyth, they were indeed my exact thoughts when the government said there will be a computer in every home and every classroom.
Poneke, my brother-in-law has been in America for 40+ years, and he's told me that there are Certain Words you don't say over the phone. Phone calls have been known to terminate suddenly and without reason when These Words are uttered.

I can't think of any words that I haven't said on the phone. I am sure all of them. Never been cut off yet.

When I was in the army in Israel I once had to sit through a unit-wide lecture on just how many agencies were listening in on every phone call made across Israel. Soldiers calling from payphones are obviously hooked up to the Mosad and other security services, while some other military inteligence units monitor cellphone calls and the home phone lines of any soldier's house. We all learned to live with it. There's only so much that would hold up in court if it were ever used. Besides, the more conversations one has to listen to, the more boring it gets...

I pity any government agent listening in on my phone calls. I am not one for long cosy chats on the phone, so any phone calls issuing from me or coming from the outside are short and sweet - usually about where we're meeting for lunch, what time do you want me to pick you up to go grocery shopping, and the like. Nothing remotely interesting to anyone but me and my family and friends.

Problem there?
Honeybee, the idea of an internet tax has been bumbling around for quite a while. Might be fun to figure out how to monitor people who are collecting government funding for doing nothing instead of finding a job.
Repley 609 from Lesley (hi Lesley!) -- If you ask Al Gore, he'll tell you he invented the internet. (BUT both He and BHO did win the Nobel Peace Prize.)
Lesley, 18 months ago our president vowed to make his administration open, free, unbiased and straightforward and totally open to the press. Seven months later, a reporter asked a question he didn't like, and the open door policy ceased to exist. White House officials where threatened with termination if they spoke to any one associated with the top cable news network in the U.S.
And if the internet belongs to everyone, shouldn't every classroom, and every child have access to the computer? It is within reach. It should not be denied. Male or Female. Rich or Poor. Black or White. Shouldn't everyone have at least a choice and/or opportunity? Albiet that we must recognize religious beliefs in countries that prosper from outside help and deny those children we wish could prosper to learn to make life better.
And ask ALL the kids in China, Iraq, Iran and maybe even Pakistan that have access to a computer, if they really, really, really know a dash of the information of the world that we know.
And Reply 614? PONEKE ----- "They definitely are watching me:-) But then I throw in a lot of 'trigger words' when I'm talking on the phone....just to rattle 'their' cage. Whoever 'they' are!

PONEKE - "they say" are a bunch of liars. I'm sure you and "they" communicate well. Also since 'they say' are a bunch of liars, do you think it's okay for me to say 'the next time an idiot like Obama gains power', will be less tolerated on this site than your previous statement about former President Bush?
AND WHERE THE HECK ---- are all the beautiful people from the U.S. that burst forward to support the devestation of the Tsunamai, the earthquake in Haiti? China? Chili? in order to raise money to support the people affected from those disasters to support the citizens from the country they live in?.
Every single one of us that is commenting, placing blame, defending, reading or seeing these threads uses a computer or:, drives a car, walks on pavement, shops at a store, drinks a soda, commutes to work, (indoor plumbing?) uses an oven, cooks on a griddle, wears glasses and reads a magazine, newspaper or even watches a television (okay maybe you have a cell phone).
It would be a breath of fresh air to actually hear what people here are doing help in their community, rather than place blame. Placing blame is easy. Healing starts in your neighborhood. It changes YOUR world and makes a better place.
