I watched Stardust just before Christmas, I wasn't looking forward to it (my wife made me watch it) but I really enjoyed it.

My son and I enjoyed Stardust, especially the line of ghosts, and the twists in the plot that made it not quite predictable.

The movie that blows my hair back, over and over, is "A Room With A View" based on the E.M. Forster novel. Definitely a chick flick period piece, but oh, how I love it.
Breaker Morant is an excellent film, and what did you think of Galipolli? That movie makes me not just cry but sob, every time I see it.
Flopsy, you ARE a veritable font of British historical facts!
And who is Colin Friels? You don't mean Collin Farrel, do you? The pretty Irishman with the unibrow? And oh, how I love Colin Firth. I refuse to watch the remake of Pride & Prejudice -- I don't want it to ruin the BBC version.
Still reading all the posts...

Scott, if you liked "Shooter," tell me you have read the Stephen Hunter sniper books? That film is based on his book, "Point Of Impact." "The Master Sniper" is one of my all-time favorite books, and I highly recommend it. Read his books in order, if you can. Some of them kind of stink, but most of them are very, very good.
And just like Tom Clancy swears he was never in the CIA and is just an insurance salesman, Stephen Hunter swears he was never in the military and is certainly and never was a sniper. I don't believe either one of them!

Flopsy, nothing will ever, ever come close to "Deadwood." That was just phenomenal.I was told that I would have a very hard time understanding them when they spoke, and it was about halfway through the fourth episode that I remembered that part. They sound like everyone I know, especially Timothy Olyphant as the Marshall from Montana. When he was walking down that muddy street with Sol Starr and Sol said to him, "Now this is what I call a goin' concern!" I thought, "Oh lord, I haven't heard anyone use that expression since I moved away from Montana and oh wait! I'm supposed to be leaning in to understand these people!"
I can tell you, absolutely, that Deadwood is dead on as far as accuracy goes, right down to the dirt under their fingernails and the mud on their skirts, and the very unusal way they spoke. I didn't have HBO when Deadwood came out, so I had to wait and then rent every season on DVD. So I had to wait a YEAR inbetween seasons. Talk about a long wait. And then, they decided to tank the movie that was going to wrap the entire series up, much to my dismay.
Nothing I have before or since comes close to it.

Another really excellent series that ended just as I was easing into it was "Boom Town." It was sort of like "Memento," with all of it playing backwards, and from each character's point of view. One day, it just disappeared.
"Memento" is right up there with movies that really blow my hair back, too. I own that one and watch it a few times a year. And all the Matrix and Alien and Terminator movies are great.
And, I do have to admit, I am hopelessly addicted to "Lost," even though it starts SO late in the season, I almost forget everything I thought I knew. If you haven't seen that one, it's worth renting from Season One so you will be set for the insanity that will be Season Four. Or Five. I've lost count. I think it's Four.
The thing that amazes me about Hugh Laurie's American accent is that he speaks so fast. Nicole Kidman has an excellent American accent, but she speaks verrrrra slowly and deliberately when using it. Hugh is a wild man! And his American "voice" is so much lower than his British voice -- he's really changed it entirely. So yes, I think he's very good and comes across as manic, which is hilarious!

I forgot about "Fringe." That one reminds me of The X-Files, and I never missed an episode of that one, either, even when Mulder and Scully left.
I just keep waiting for them to cancel "Fringe," though, since it truly is right out there on the edge.
And I agree with Anton -- Laurie may be British, but House is definitely American! I think he's a riot on that show.

Oh My Word... a Deadwood fan! I don't know anyone else who's ever watched it - when they showed it over here, it was buried on some obscure channel I don't have at an hour when most people would be in bed so none of my friends have seen it. I can't tell you how I saw it at first in case someone comes to feel my collar but I did eventually buy the DVDs because I loved it so much and I knew I'd watch it again.
They did change the language in one respect - apparently when Victorians swore, they used religious words but nowadays no one would recognise that as foul language and some Americans might get upset so they swapped the words with "modern" Anglo-Saxon and it makes perfect sense to us. I hate the over use of bad language on films and tv, it's sloppy and uncalled for, but oh boy, in Deadwood I wouldn't change a thing! I loved the mud, the leery looks, the vioence, the plain awfulness of it all - and I will never forgive them for not making the last series or the movie.
And Ian McShane - who knew Lovejoy could act like that? Lovejoy was a BBC drama series from years ago, Ian McShane played the title role, of an antique dealer with a real eye for the main chance and for the women - it played on the BBC for years as light hearted Sunday night drama. So while Ian McShane has popped up in other things since then and is a great Shakespearean actor, seeing him in Deadwood came as a total shock.
As for Gallipoli... I cried. But largely because my dad was there, not in the movie but actually at Gallipoli.

I saw bits and pieces of Deadwood and thought that the period detail was very good, including the dialogue.
However, you are right Flopsy, because it was put on late night/early morning it was a bit difficult for some of us to watch it on a weekly basis. Ian Macshane seen acting was a surprise too!
