With the advent smart phones that let you know who's on the other end, a lot elocution posturing has gone by the wayside. We have a wide variety of regional accents each with it's layers of social fruitcake but like you we still have those that want to be toff ;-)

My OH has only got one accent, pure Oxbridge. He can't help it, it's just how he speaks.
The level of anger and sheer unpleasantness that used to be aimed at him on a regular basis when we lived in Manchester was unbelievable. People used to accuse him of being arrogant, patronising and all that, when all he wanted was to buy a paper or ask about train times.
The Deputy head at my school hung up on him several times.
Insanity and prejudice still rule!

We have a lot of regional dialects - I think the hardest one to understand, even for an English person, is the Geordie accent from the North-East. Personally - I don't have an accent at all, it's just everybody else that does - lol ;)

BBC news readers are starting to have regional accents now - even Geordie. I claim the Lancashire accent as being the 'Queen's English' - because the Queen is the Duke of Lancaster.

Here I am... doing my assignment, just about finished I think, just have my reference list to type out (groan)... I'm just worried about my length of answers, they're a bit short in places, but when it comes to science stuff I'm not verbose - short and to the point that's me. :) It's when they give you that dratted ... word count guidance... and you think, I'd better think of something else to say ;)
So, loving the conversation on accents :) Apparently I sounded a bit Welsh until recently, but I now seem to be reverting to Yorkshire (as I was brought up). I did have to temper my accent quite a bit as they thought I sounded funny when I went to Oxford (although some thought it was cool :) ).
My daughter speaks Welsh with a Harrogate accent :D

Word count! Is this person a scientist or an English major? I'd fail miserably I'm afraid. Huh? (word count one)

Who or what would be an example of Welsh with a Harrogate. I'm getting more bewildered by sentence ;-b

Harrogate is a place in Yorkshire that is a bit more up-market ;) and they speak a little more like Queen's English.
My daughter went to nursery there as that was where I worked, and now we've moved to Wales and she speaks Welsh (the language) and sometimes you can hear the Harrogate accent come through. Her English certainly sounds posher than mine ;) pl-ar-ster as opposed to pl-a-ster :)

Thanks baban, I was hoping this little discussion would make the language differences manageable. I don't know now and my head is starting to ache.
I think I'll get pl-ar-stered! Is that to pretentious? Oh well ;-)
