It's that simple! I've seen a few but although familiar with character maps (I've written extensively about obsolete alphabet letters here so had to) don't recall seeing those in the rest, although they may have just gone over my head. I know the four figure codes need a trick of pressing the keys in a certain order or nothing happens, and can't yet make the single ones appear at all. But I know where they hide now, they just need some persuading out.

| Do you release the Alt key as soon as you've typed the numbers? |

☺ Yes, release the Alt as you release the number key. I found these on a page titled Facebook Symbols, but they work here, too. ☺

| I asked because I was wondering what David was doing. When I tried it for the first time, I wanted to hold the Alt key down the whole time, and just tap away at the numbers, but nothing was happening. The symbols appeared the instant I let it go. |

I got one symbol so far but can't do it again, it may be the laptop, I'll try tomorrow when I'm on the PC. I know there are two ways to do it and only one works as I can get the normal character map up that way on it, but just wasn't familiar with little pictures along with the symbols and accents etc.

Does your laptop have the numeric keypad? The Alt combinations generally don't work with the numbers above the letters, you need the numbers on the side.

As laptops don't have a separate keypad, some other keys double up to create the numbers used in ASCII. These keys have a number on them in a blue/grey colour. The keys you need are: m,j,k,l,u,i,o,7,8,9,0. If you look at those keys you'll see that the M has a 0 painted on it, K has a 2, L has 3... those are the numbers you need.
To use those numbers you need to turn the NumberLock on - on a laptop that involves holding down the Fn key (bottom left of British keyboard) and pressing NumLock (top right). Then hold down the ALT key, and use the keys to enter the relevant code. Then release the ALT key and a character should appear - or not if you got the code wrong. ;)
You'll need to turn the NumLock off before you can type anything in normal characters on the multi-function keys. Just press the NumLock key to turn it off.

That makes sense now, the laptop only has numbers along the top. Back on the PC I can ♪ ☺ ☻ ♥ and although I've seen them used a few times I didn't know they were on the standard keyboard despite using plenty of characters not on the keyboard. What klutz decided to drop fractions while keeping the _ and adding crap like | ` and ¬ which sit there and look at you like a message dropped on the floor by the cat. Except we are able to leave them there without any consequences. I got the smileys just with 1-9 which makes it pretty easy, I bet the fractions have at least 3 numbers to remember. Shows how they target their audience doesn't it.

Jonathan came home yesterday evening. He says he's had manflu for weeks but he found me even more tired and floppy than he was. He said I was grey - nice. Normally he comes home to be spoilt but this year it's not going to happen straight away.
Instead of collapsing in a heap after a cold journey, he started bringing me food and drink till colour started taking over from the grey.
This morning he drove me to see my GP, who is still tying himself in knots not to acknowledge me when I mention insomnia, and nearly burst into tears when he decided that I have swine flu. Why did I come in with flu symptoms? Sorry - I didn't realise they were. This really doesn't feel like flu at all...
But I am now armed to the gills with antibiotics and antivirals, and a nice son who doing as much as he can to keep me going. It's going to be a great holiday! |

Oh Lesley, you have my sympathies. My doctor decided I'd had it too (still think he was wrong) but I was terribly ill for a week or so. Take it easy, enjoy being a bit spoiled. I do hope you recover quickly. Have a great time with your son, which is really what the holidays are about. :)

If he's right it's good news in a way as means you've got something that should be gone in a week or so. But antibiotics for flu? Where did he study? The polytechnic of the internet (Bombay)? Anyhow, pretty awful timing but hope the treatment starts to work quickly and hope you enjoy the holidays.
