Glad it was only a plug and not something requiring an appointment. Don't say he left his laundry for you as well? You must be an angel ;)

Thanks, David, I found the loose phone jack thingy after he'd gone. I did think I might need to call my tame computer engineer and his girlfriend up from London, but no need. There's precious little I can do on the hardware without advice or intervention, so it's nice to be reconnected without outside help.
No, I am anything but an angel (you know better than that!): it's just the towels and bedlinen he used. When he gets home, he'll send everything off to a laundry service. He packed enough to see him through five days in Folkestone and four days with me, allowing for extremes of weather, which is why his suitcase weighed a ton.
I think he said he'd packed three heavy long-sleeved sweaters or cardigans, and two short-sleeved sweaters. That's a lot of sweaters for such a short trip.
Once upon a time I knew a man who took three heavy hand-knitted cable cardigans, with leather football buttons, for a fortnight in June on the Costa Brava. His mum packed his suitcase for him - he was only 24. :'( |

| Thanks, Rowena. x I'm going to scrub up and go out with my oldest friend in Bedford. We'll have lunch - and then who knows what excitement awaits in Bedford? |

Thank you. :)
We had a rather nice lunch (a thousand calories a bite), and then went shopping...
Jonathan rang just before eight, and the doorbell went as we were talking. Walked to the front door - mutter, mutter; grumble, grumble - and he's standing on the doorstep, still talking to me.
Night!

It was very sweet. :)
I'm still in a state of shock because I got up at 8, made him breakfast, and drove him to the station. It's been a long time since I saw 8am!

Just had an unusual phone call. I heard a second or two of background noise, and then a man saying son of a bitch. He immediately asked to speak to me.
Speaking - but what was that "son of a bitch" about?
He didn't answer - he hung up. Phone manner needs a bit of work. :) |

How about this....
Man places an important call to you and wishes to appear professional. Just prior to you picking up the phone, he drops or spills something on his desk/pants/floor/etc. You answer the phone. He hopes you did not hear the naughty words come out of his mouth. He asks for you, you reply "speaking, etc.". He then realizes he has not identified himself and hangs up rather than risking lowering your opinion of him. He hopes to call you later while praying you will not recognize his voice so he is able to retain some dignity.
Hey, you never know. It could have happened.
Happy Belated Birthday. Did you have cake and, if so, was it delicious?

Daymare, that probably is exactly what happened! He hurt himself, or someone told him a tale that made his hair curl.
I had a call the day before - caller's number shown as unavailable, a couple of seconds of background noise, then whoever it was hung up. That's annoying more than creepy.

Thank you, I did have an delicious lunch out, but I didn't have cake. Perhaps tomorrow. At the exercise class I've been going to, people bring in cakes when it's their birthday. There's something bizarre about a lot of heart patients bringing in iced fairy cakes, cream cakes, chocolate éclairs... I've bought a cartload of little cakey and biscuity things. I may have one! |

Just remembered something quite astonishing from Cousin's return journey.
He's full of arthritis, walks with a stick, can't do stairs, can't carry anything. Scared to cook in case he drops the pot or pan, but not worried about dropping his microwaved ready meal, funnily enough. But I digress.
When he travels on trains, he arranges to have help. Bedford station's got a lift, but the train he came on arrived on platform 1, so he just got off the train and walked out.
The train that would take him home was expected on platform 4, but he didn't have to cross the bridge because the people at Bedford station called ahead and diverted the train to platform 1.
Who'd have known that British Rail could do anything so good? |

What else have I forgotten?
Cousin told me not to look as he bought me a birthday card. It's got an enormous badge on it, bearing the legend Young at Heart. Highly apposite and very clever, but do I want to wear a 3" diameter badge? Lemme think.
Jonathan stayed over but had to leave early for an 11am lecture. That meant getting to the station at about 9am. I got up just after 8am, gave him tea and orange juice and breakfast, and we were in the car before nine. Amazing. See if I can keep it up.
Equipment at the Wednesday cardiac exercise class includes a couple of very small trampolines. I just stood on them and bounced carefully. A few weeks ago, I bounced up in the air. That was exciting, believe it or not. I've had both feet planted firmly on the ground since 1996. Last week, instead of walking up and down the hall, I ran. I haven't done that since 1996 either. See what excitement awaits tomorrow. :) |

Did you 1471 the number? The explanation sounds about right but I'd want to know who was responsible if possible, especially if they called back you'd know who it was next time. I've made comments about a few people I've spoken to on the phone before and then wondered if they'd actually hung up when I thought they had or heard it. I'm more careful now and they are still speaking to me so I think I got away with it.

The number was unavailable. :-( I stopped my anonymous call barring, mostly because I was getting a lot of calls from doctors and hospitals, and it made it easier for them, but I'm tempted to reinstate it, because of idiotic calls like this one.
Why I got the bar in the first place? When Jonathan was about twelve or thirteen, I answered the phone to a girl who said she was offering to sell him a star, to be named after a Special Person In His Life, who could be (*thinking quickly*), his mother!
As she didn't give her name or number; and she rang just after midnight, we agreed that this was inappropriate use of the telephone system, and that's when we got the bar. I don't think anyone else has offered to sell him a star! |
