Sir Norm was quite good in "Last of the Summer Wine" too.
Gary,I think the serious role was "Going Gently",from the early 80's. He played a terminal cancer victim.

Oh dear - Last of the Summer Wine is yet another thing I haven't watched!
The film I was thinking about was set in the 60s, and has him as a married man having an affair with a very young single woman, and I think it must be What's Good For The Goose, except this film is billed as a comedy...
Going Gently is another one I blinked and missed.

| Thanks, Gary, I knew that. I just thought I'd say that I don't know why, because I have been asked. |

I was contemplating going out tonight. Not too sure, because it was Israel In Egypt, and I'm not that keen on oratorio, and it was raining, which is always a little demotivating, so I didn't bother.
I've done some laundry, emptied and filled the dishwasher, added to the recycling, and defrosted the freezer, which was definitely more useful and possibly more entertaining. Do I have a glamorous life or what? |

Just curious...Do you have to 'defrost' the freezer? I haven't had to do that in, probably 10 years! :) It does it all by it self! YES!

I finally had to get a new (not secondhand) fridge freezer when the last one gave out, and it is a major relief not having ice around the freezer or fridge any more as even when I finally got round to trying nothing would get the ice off in a day (I couldn't leave the food out any longer, and shouldn't have anything like that) except a metal pick of some sort that had to lever the stuff off manually. It wouldn't melt more than a small amount, which flooded the kitchen despite apparently leaving almost the same amount as before around the compartments. I expect there's a trick to it, but maybe it's before six inches or more have built up.

Many years ago, I used a hand held hairdryer, to melt the frost in the freezer...Not any longer, as the thing automatically thaws! Yea! :)

I think self-defrosting freezers come up to 0C/32F every so often, which may reduce the shelf life of the contents. I don't do it very often but something fell out of a drawer and I didn't realise that it had stopped me closing the door properly. The inside was a very icy mess before I realised.
David, set it to fast freeze for an hour or three to give the food more of a fighting chance while it's left out. Switch it off, empty it, throw a blanket over the food if you're worried or the kitchen is hot. Put a few pots and pans full of boiling or very hot water inside, close the door and leave it for ten minutes. Repeat till all the ice has fallen off. Throw the fallen-off chunks of ice in the sink.
Dry the inside and get it well on the way back to freezing before you put the food back. If the ice isn't more than an inch thick, you can probably go from switching off to refilling in about two hours. Gosh what fun we're all having. |

And if it isn't full, put old towels or something in the empty spaces. When it's trying to freeze empty space, it will ice up quicker. You can get those "freezer carrier bags" too, in shops, for carrying frozen stuff home, and they come in handy to put the food in while the freezer is defrosting.

Rowena, aren't we pure domestic goddesses? I think we could write a book, unless the title's already been taken.
Mine is usually full to bursting, although yesterday's exercise was a good opportunity for a bit of a purge. Ages ago, Jonathan bought some pies to fill his hollow legs. There was one left, and I knew I was never going to eat it, so I binned it. I peeped at the date first: 2007. Doesn't time fly?
I don't usually bother to look at dates, unless I want an excuse to throw out something I know I shall never eat, like the broad beans (2008). |

I've just been reading about Liz Smith. Here are two dreadful lines from her biography:
"When Liz was only two years old, her mother died in childbirth. Her father walked out of her life shortly afterwards, when his new wife did not wish him to have any contact with his previous life, including his young daughter."
I know this doesn't make her unique, because I've heard of lots of people who demand that their new other half cut all existing ties, including their children. I just can't imagine being confronted with this degree of selfish insecurity masquerading as love, or the spineless waste of space who'd go along with it. |

My ice was a few inches or more when I last did the defrost and the new one is frost free and surprised now it's possible every one isn't.
I don't know who Liz Smith is but anyone who drops their relatives when they get married should have a new criminal law created for it along with a pretty revolting punishment, I'm sure I could work some out if they ever brought one in. My cousin's wife did that in the 60s and soon after did it to him with his three children and he's never seen them since. He can be a sod actually but not as bad as many.

Liz Smith is an actress, but it could be anyone.
I knew a man who got married for a second time to a woman half his age, and that was the last anyone saw of him. No, no giggling, it wasn't like that - she had simply alienated or barred him from seeing anyone he knew before he met her. A lot of famous people have stories of parents who walked out on them, but then so do a lot of non-famous people, and I have no idea how many people I don't know and haven't heard of. |

When Gothson was about 5 his father's new wife had a baby and said to Gothson "you can't come round to our house, you might wake the baby". Gothson never stayed there again, never visited for at least ten years, just used to visit his paternal grandparents every so often, until his grandfather died and his grandmother made it clear that he was in her way as she "Merry Widowed" her way across Europe and found a new boyfriend. The new boyfriend moved in with granny dearest and that was that.
