When he wrote out the prescription, he attached a card for me to get a blood test in "two or three" weeks. As Ray said, it's like a treadmill, and you can never get off. You get something wrong with you, you get pills for it, and they have side effects, so you get more pills, which make something else worse...
"Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em,
And little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum.
And the great fleas themselves, in turn, have greater fleas to go on,
While these again have greater still, and greater still, and so on." (Augustus De Morgan)
I'd put up a link to "sing a rainbow" but I couldn't guarantee that it wouldn't be Cilla Black singing it, and then you'd all run away screaming. |

I've had a brief wander through YouTube, and oh dear - I never thought I'd say this, but I actually like Cilla Black's version!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTGW3VLDZGo
I'm sure Delta Goodrem can sing if she wants to, but she isn't singing this - she's breathing; only a few gasps away from Jane Birkin's tour de force with Serge Gainsbourg. Commie Talbot may have been singing, but someone's dubbed Goodrem's voice over hers. And Peggy Lee most definitely is singing but her voice is drowned out by the music.
For the first and last time, Cilla wins. I think I need to go and lie in a darkened room. |

| Calling Miss Talbot "Commie" wasn't Freudian, I promise. |

I just played an Expert game, in the "by the numbers" category. One of the questions was:
How many home runs did some bloke hit to break some other bloke's record?
"Some other bloke" died in 1948. I hadn't even heard of the man who broke it, but I've learnt that he did so in 1961 and died in 1985.
A lot of people got 15/15, so they must have given the right answer, and the question in the quiz it came from has had 78% correct answers. I wonder how many got it right because they'd seen the question before, or because they guessed well: and how many people remember sports statistics from fifty years ago?

Tomorrow is cardiac exercise day. In the evening, Jonathan is joining the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra to play in St Johns, Smith Square. I shall go if I have the energy and there are seats left.
He's handed in his project but he also had to do a poster, which is a précis of the project - 75 pages condensed into one sheet. He (and many others) will have to be available for four hours tomorrow, while people wander about looking at posters, assessing them and asking questions about them.
On Friday he'll be playing in the college string orchestra for the last time, and that's it. Finished. No more stoodent! He won't know what to do with himself! |

I did the poster thing for my dissertation, and let the kids help me make the poster (this was Gothson aged 7 and no2 son aged 4 at the time lol). I was heavily pregnant with RPMoH at the time, and as big as a bus, so I put some giant dungarees on and every time anyone came near I sort of winced, pressed my hands to my back and smiled bravely, and they went away again looking concerned :-D I only spoke to about two people all day, I got to sit down when everyone else had to stand looking alert, and I got to have food and drink in the hall when everyone else had to go outside if they needed to eat :-D

Rowena, I love the image. I hope The Marshmallow knows that she was useful even before she was born!
Gary, more information in a couple of weeks when he's had his results. |

"will have to be available for four hours tomorrow"
No, that would have meant Wednesday but it's actually happening on Thursday morning.
"On Friday he'll be playing in the college string orchestra"
No, that's Thursday evening.
Another reason to stop taking Ramapril - it's giving me pump-head! |

Cardiac exercise class wasn't brilliant. These pills are having a whole heap of miserable side effects, and today I couldn't do much more than I could when I started going in January.
There are a few people who act like it's the end of the world if you haven't moved on to the next thing when time's up, some people who just work round you and find something else to do - and some who do both. Today, some brain-dead old trout thought it would be clever to make me move up by shouting in my ear. Ouch. Then she thought it would be really hilarious to shout in the other ear as well. OUCH. My hearing still works very well - I can hear a quartz watch ticking - and all I need is some half-wit acting like a two-year-old and trying to ruin one of the few bits of me that still works. Perhaps next time she can throw herself on the floor and wave her arms and legs about instead.
It's an indication of my chemically-induced zombification that I didn't tell her what I thought of her - or kill her. Probably just as well.

I didn't go to the concert. I just requisitioned a big fat shiny programme. He's got one for me, and he said it was fun. I'm conserving my energy for tomorrow's. He's played in the college string ensemble for five years, and this'll be the last one.
Poster in the afternoon, music in the evening, and that's five years wrapped up. And his last really long summer break till he retires. :) |

I took seven of the new pills - from Wednesday bedtime to Tuesday bedtime - and couldn't face any more. On Wednesday, I rang the surgery with a list of ten or so unwelcome side-effects. I wrote them down because otherwise I'd have forgotten to mention half of them. By Thursday I was feeling human again, and had an uneventful and pleasant visit to London for the string concert.
Today I spoke to my GP. He said, if they don't agree with you, stop taking them. Most people get on with them, but about one in fifty don't. It was worth trying...
Then a friend took me to a cream tea fundraiser at her daughter's school. White bread sandwiches with the crusts off, cut into tiny little pieces; some people who knew there would be sandwiches had skipped lunch. They were going to be very disappointed! Then there were scones with jam and cream; cupcakes, slices of fruitcake and miniature chocolate éclairs; and little meringues topped with berries. Tea and coffee and two choirs of small girls singing to us. Lots of women wearing flowery dresses and a handful of nervous-looking men. Great fun.
Jonathan may be home ("Bedford home") on Sunday. |

Thanks, Gary, but I've stopped taking the Ramapril, and shan't be starting again. I'm having a bit of a medicine clear-out, and I'll be giving the pharmacist a bag of expired pills, including failures like this one, to get rid of.
There are others I've taken with no ill-effects,including some vicious ones, like Amiodarone, and survived. There's bound to be the odd one that just makes things worse. The difficulty is telling the difference. It was easy this time, because the adverse reactions began as soon as I started them, and stopped soon after I stopped taking them.
It'll be nice to have the little darling home for a while. |

Scum neighbours were out in the back garden yesterday, shouting at each other, as usual. But for them it would have been peaceful. At about seven o'clock, they started playing music, with lots of guitar and whiny voices, and continued shouting over the music.
At ten o'clock, it was dark but they didn't seem to have noticed. I rang the council, and got all the options - press this button if it's an emergency that can't wait till Monday - then rang the police station and asked if there is a prescribed time after which loud music in a quiet residential area is regarded as unacceptable.
"We don't deal with noise any more but the council has a late patrol out tonight. I'll pass you their details."
The council patrol, two people in a car, arrived a little before eleven, five minutes after the "music" had stopped. I met them on the front path, and they said they would send me a diary sheet, to record the noise these people make for the next fortnight or thereabouts - but do ring again if the noise becomes excessive.
They can also come and listen for themselves to judge if noise is unreasonable, or install monitoring equipment. They said they can't knock on the door and ask them to make less noise. To do that, they need police with them.
If the noise is judged to be unacceptable, they will send the householders a letter warning them that they need to control it. These people are renting. They are responsible but the council will also hold the owners responsible - good. Last time I mentioned it to the owners, she laughed and said I'd complain if the Queen moved in next door. Har har.
When I went back inside, they'd started up again, but stopped again a little after eleven. I sat and waited for it to start again. Thank goodness it didn't. Living next door to pigs means wasting much of your life waiting for the other shoe to drop. |

We had the same problem with neighbours in a rented property. Complaints from individuals were ignored by them but we all got together and bombarded the police and the local authority moaning about the noise etc. Within two months they had gone and the owners of the property actually came and apologised!

Not again Lesley, that is not on and needs dealing with fast, Do you know who the estate agent is letting the property?. If so tell them unless something is not done to make those scum bags toe the line action will be taken against them as landlords.

bloodandsand - is it Bev? - I've asked the neighbours if it bothers them, and they say not really, too far away, can't hear them, we sit/eat/relax/sleep at the front, and the house is double-glazed, don't want to get involved, don't want it on record that I've complained about them in case it makes it harder to sell my house, scared of repercussions ... so, if I want to stay up after 10pm, and I want to enjoy the back of the house in relative peace, I am alone. I may as well be walking the streets in my nightdress, screaming "You kids - get off my lawn!"
Gary, I hadn't thought of that. I used to see the owners drive up once a month to check that everything was all right, so I assumed it was a private let. I haven't seen them recently but that doesn't mean a thing. It hadn't occurred to me that letting agents might also have a duty of care towards the neighbours. That is interesting. |

Gary's right, the letting agents do have some responsibility; I think that's how our noisy neighbours were eventually turfed out. I didn't deal with coordinating all the complaints but the neighbour who did said that he'd been on to the letting agent. (yes it is Bev)
