Am sure he will get home in one piece Lesley, he sounds so resilient and sensible.

I'm sure he will, Gary.
The first time he went, the other families were running round in circles, banging on about how their little darlings would have to come out of their cotton wool cocoons to get into a go-kart, and me thinking Wimps! The school wouldn't dream of taking them somewhere that wasn't safe!
Famous last words.
He's now with a family of keen, experienced karters (kartists?) and I am as happy about it as I'm ever going to be. Could be worse - could be a motor bike - or, even worse, a push-bike in London.

That reminded me of another schoolmate who was enclosed in cotton wool. He was the only child in the class who didn't have a mobile phone. His parents said they didn't want him risking his health with something that could fry his brains, but it was all right - if he needed help, his friends would be bound to let him use theirs. Love the attitude. |

My reply would have been your mum does not want you to fry your brain, so sorry you cannot use my phone, as i do not wish to go against your mothers wishes

Speaking as the only ones in our neighborhood who still have a 'land line', I wish people would not think of us as their personal 'phone booth'.
If their power goes out, so does their portable phone. If cell power goes down, so does their cell phone. If they forget to charge their cell phone, it does not mean my phone is for their usage.
Perhaps I should start charging a fee.
Hi, Lesley. Thanks for letting me vent.

| That would have been mine too, but twelve-year-olds don't think like that, or may not have the words to express it. It's only their cynical parents that have the thoughts and the words. :( |

Vent away - I would!
About ten years ago, Jonathan was coming home from an inter-schools quiz contest, with three other boys, and a teacher driving them. They hit some unmarked, unlit building works, and two of the tyres blew. (They were not alone - there were a lot of cars sitting in the dark with dead tyres.)
Of course the first thing you want to do is tell the families that they'll be late. The other boys had mobiles, but they were either out of credit, or uncharged. I seem to remember that the teacher didn't even have a phone. Jonathan's phone was on contract, and fully charged. Just as well, really!
That sort of thing doesn't happen too often. If I had a constant stream of callers asking to use my phone, I would close the curtains and pretend I wasn't in. |

I'll go through the boxes and scan a few in. I think I've got the two different ones as well, both at Le Touquet where our friends lived near to.

That'll be good!
Today I made a monster bread pudding, with a pound of bread. Surrounded by horror - when in doubt: eat. |

How close is all this 'horror'? I think about you and the kid (and of course all the UK FTers)every time I see something new. Stay home, be safe, and get the GUN! ;)

It's on the news and the internet, and for now it's centred on the biggest cities - London, Manchester, Birmingham. I don't think Bedford is big enough for anyone to be interested, and I hope we have calm before anyone is. My brother's family is in north-west London and they're OK. When Jonathan gets back from France, he'll be here or in Berkshire, both comparatively quiet - thank goodness.
I haven't got a gun, sorry. :( |

You have us.
Good night. I am off to meet the sandman.
Hopefully, tomorrow will bring good news regarding the riots....the end of them.

I surely hope this 'thing' does NOT move your way...But Why don't you have a gun?

No one has a gun here (officially anyway), besides the few for sport only needing a licence after the Dunblane shooting a few years ago even that became almost impossible. At least it means very few criminals carry them as the police don't as a rule either so the worst that could happen is they can get away if the police are too slow or few, but half the time the police know who they are and raid them the next day anyway.

Mostly the people that have guns in this country are criminals, the "Nanny State" making it almost impossible to own one legally.
When I was "into" the re-enactment scene, I owned (legally)a smoothbore repro of the 1860 Enfield rifle........we had to use smoothbore so they were classified shotgun, the licence for which the police were marginally more willing to issue than a full firearms licence.
The "performance" needed to get this made me wonder if I was suspected of plotting to start WW3!
So.....unfortunately we are not allowed to shoot, or injure in any way, those attacking, rioting, looting and destroying our country.
I suspect, after it all quietens down, the Solicitors will make enough money on "police brutality" cases to fund an entire army.
Personally, IMO, anyone committing criminal violence, and whom gets injured or killed in process, gets what they deserve.........."occupational hazard".
I wish I still had my old Enfield though, because believe me, whilst I would face a murder charge, anyone attacking me or my property would get shot.........I'd worry about consequences afterwards. Option doesn't exist though. Sigh.

Of course there is one place that you can be perfectly safe as the rioters daren't go there.
The nearest job centre..

Merv tested me yesterday to reassure me that he was safe, because he was hiding in a jobcentre. I'm glad other people are saying it too!
I read on facebook earlier a heart-warming quote from Waterstones in Manchester:
"We're staying open. If they steal books, they might learn something." |

| Whinge whinge - I just did an expert game in more than three minutes. It took about 15 seconds for the questions to load, O submitted the answers and waited and eentually got page unavailable, tried again and was told that the server had reset or the question set had expired. So I started from scratch, clicked through the identical questions, waited ten seconds, and got my score - at last - in 217 seconds. AAAAARGH! |
