Same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago, Lesley, I felt incredibly embarrassed! Glad to see that everything in your neck of the woods is ok. It's pouring down here so that might hold things off tonight.

Lesley, I've been in the same position. Mega seconds but an amazing score.
I like to believe I was going for the 'longest time it took to complete this quiz' invisible badge.
Better luck next time!

Bev, stay inside and lock everything! It's cold here and it's going to rain very soon. It hadn't occurred to me but yes, I can't imagine too many casual drunken looters and vandals bothering to go out if it's wet. Let's hope.
The line from Waterstones has spread - it's represented on four different Facebook pages, with an aggregate 35,000 "Likes" so far. Here's the biggest one:

I think my record for finishing a quiz, with a system crash in the middle of it, was about eight minutes. What a lovely idea for a badge - beats the no score for Impossible! |

Nice one. I've got to go and drop off a birthday present, let's hope the rain has kept the roving gangs off the roads.

Just the other week I played my knockout game, unaware that the daily maintenance was about to start. Whan I hit submit The red notice came up saying it had begun. Ah well, off I went, served dinner, showered came back and had to do the whole thing again. Unfortunately the time started from when I FIRST tried. 5565 seconds. I actually got a score of 1200.

Back safe and well, even went to Tesco on the way home. Not an unescorted, hooded or masked youth in sight!

I woke up this morning to the sound of breaking glass, at the front of the house, and then the back. Recycling collection day. ;)
And no guns, thank you. While it has all been terrible, how much worse it would have been if all those rioters had the right to carry guns, it doesn't bear thinking about.
Meanwhile, it's raining. Heaven's own water cannon. :)

Everything on FT has been taking as much as twenty or thirty seconds to load for the last couple of days. Things haven't been this slow since dial-up, but everything else is load well within a second. Is anyone else watching the FT hour-glass flailing, and giving up, or just me?
We can now throw window envelopes and textiles into the recycling bin, but not glass. Maybe one day we'll catch up with London and Northampton.
I've got all the windows open, and all I can hear is silence. It's wonderful. |

No problems here, I found IE was the usual culprit with hanging issues, and rarely have problems with Chrome now although it took it some time for its features to work with Flash etc.
The time issue is worst for hard core, when my laptop misbehaves (either all the time or a few times a day minimum) you only need a minute or so and you're sunk. I lost a 14 or 15 in general when that happened and in went just over 130 seconds, and they all count there. Otherwise if things are playing up you have to go into the new memory performance area if on Vista and see what's jamming the CPU/ram. That identified a few nasties on the laptop and since I removed them it's been relatively OK, one being IE and the other being AVG virus protection which had got itself carried away. Firewalls can cause hanging as well if not them.

This box took 20 seconds to load. :(
I found IE generally slow and unstable, and I'm on Chrome now.
That's interesting about AVG. This computer came with Avast anti-virus installed. It spent a month reminding me that my free trial period would expire in a few days and then, mercifully, faded away. It's been back recently, flashing menacingly at me from the bottom of the screen. Coincidence?
Thank you, David, I shall get my tame computer consultant to have a look at it. :) |

I found my school report last night. It made pretty uninspiring reading. I was good at the subjects I liked and rubbish at the rest.
Modern school reports go on for pages, often with standard paragraphs on a word processor. Mine was a hard-cover book, with a double-page spread for each term, and each subject teacher had about three inches for comments.
One comment that stood out was "lazy and indifferent" from my second form history teacher. Would they get away with writing something like that now? would they even try?
I have never been able to understand why teachers castigate children for not being interested in the subject they teach. Oh yes - it must be the child's fault for picking a boring teacher. |
