I'd always thought that once you got a blog you had a blog in perpetuity, and could continue to add to it, whether you were a paying member or not. That may have been right at one time, but it isn't now.

I wrote an update yesterday, a few hours after I'd had an email to tell me that my paying membership had expired, and got an "access denied" message. I thought it was a shame to waste it. Off I go...

The old reply to thread function was removed because it got to the point where people weren't even reading the announcements and assuming, by default, that they were somehow being wronged or forgotten or insulted or abused or cheated out of something in some manner.

Lesley I do think joined up writing is a thing of times gone by. I don't like writing joined up, I far prefer the letters to stand alone and so that is how I have written since they stopped trying to force me to do otherwise. Part of the reason for me is because I am left handed and smear the ink all over the page, so I try to minimise that by not joining the letters up. I think perhaps part of the problem is the teachers "telling" kids that this is the way you should write and if you don't then, it's wrong. Uhh, is it? Surely if something is legible it matters not.

I am not going to rant about doctors, all I am going to say is what do you expect? Take mediocre students and you get mediocre doctors. You get mediocre doctors and you get mediocre care. It is so good to hear about the few doctors (albeit teamed up with many biological and biochemical scientists) who make advances in medicine - very refreshing.

Jon

PS. Lesley, I shall get back to your PM shortly - I have been ill the last couple of days and you know that my punctuality with regards PMs is rather shocking at the best of times. :D

Oh, one lump, please. And I brought some of my Mom's homemade apple pudding with vanilla sauce.

Good morning everyone from Friday the Thirteenth - in TodayLand now. :)

Apple pudding? Intriguing! Not to mention - it sounds most appetising.

Jon, well done sticking to your guns. I have a left-handed Jonathan of my own and I know it's not easy, specially when the form tutor announces at the beginning of year 7 that nobody will be allowed to write with anything other than a fountain pen. So I had a quiet word with the head of year, who was a human being, and bought him a ballpoint pen.

Taking mediocre students and getting mediocre doctors sounds like what happens when doctors decide that that's what they want their children to be, and don't stop for one second to consider that their children might (shock horror) want to do something else. Like run away to join the circus.

You've always been - er - unpunctual about writing back. :) I'm sorry to hear you've been ill and hope you're mending or mended. Freshers' flu?

Tomorrow morning (aka today) I have an appointment for retinal screening. I just hope they do it faster than they did last year, and that they only have to do it once. Night! Enjoy the tea and apple pudding!

I found you again Lesley hope that your trip goes ok and they do things right for you.

As for Jonno being punctual answering pm's that just does not compute lol, he was a ex team mate that no longer likes us on our team :)

Apple pudding sounds delicious...an apple being my favorite fruit. Lesley, good luck with your appointment. I hope everything turns out well.

As far as writing goes...I too tend to write everything disconnected. I remember that in the third grade, when we learned to write "joined up" that my teacher put my writing up on the bulletin board as an example of poor penmanship. I have had a neurosis about it ever since.

I have terrible penmanship. I print everything, rather than write in cursive. Have done this for many years.

Hello to all. Do you think I could have some apple pudding? It's my favourite :)

Also, WHSmith biro pens are the best for us lefties...no/minimal smears. And they're cheap as dirt!

Welcome back, Gary. Jonno is a flibbertigibbet - I shouldn't take it personally - I'm on my fourth team in just under three years. He's rubbish at updating his blog too, have you noticed? :p

Thank you for saving me apple pudding, Beth - do you have a recipe, or is it a family secret?

Connie, I'm not surprised at the effect on your mind - that was a miserable thing to do to anyone, but certainly to a 9/10yo. The teacher sounds like the sort of person who goes to war and gets "accidentally" killed by his own people.

Thank you, everyone - today's appointment was uneventful. Last year the images didn't come out clearly enough, so I was called back a few weeks later for them to take fresh images with a slit lamp. I asked the nurse if there was any record of that on my notes. "No, nothing. That must have been the Eye service - we're the Diabetic service." As far as I'm concerned, I go to The Hospital, where I see People operating Machines. I don't know (or care) about their internal divisions, although they're clearly very important to the people who do know (and care) about these things, so perhaps I should make the effort? Nah. Can't be bothered.

I arrived at 11.28 for 11.30, had drops to dilate my pupils (which is why it's not safe to drive till they wear off, which takes about six hours), and was out by 12.20. Hospital restaurant for cod and chips, and home.

Now, in theory, I wait five or six weeks for the results to drop through the letterbox. In practice, it's likely to be a repeat of last year, when I got called back so they could take pictures with a slit lamp. I was there for hours. ("Oh no - that wasn't us - that was the Other Lot.")

That was lovely and straightforward but the journey was a bit of a mess. I've been using one mini-cab firm for a while, because it's been generally more reliable than the rest. I wavered a little last year when I met the MotorMouth driver who can't get a girlfriend, thinks he's a chef, and said things like "Watch and learn, darling; watch and learn," as he took a 40mph short-cut through the hospital. Since then he has answered the phone but hasn't driven me anywhere. He's irritating but, on balance, is likely to do less damage in two minutes on the phone than in twenty minutes behind a wheel. I also wavered, more recently, when the fare crept up by 50 pence and then, just as quickly, went down again. Hmmm.

When I can drive there, it takes me ten minutes to get there and ten minutes to find a parking place. This morning I decided to allow half an hour, and asked to be picked up at eleven. At eleven o'clock, I went outside to wait on the pavement - not that I could see much, or the driver could have seen me, because the pavement was once again littered with builders' vans.

At five past eleven, I rang to tell MotorMouth that I had a new landmark for his booking at xyz - the house is hidden by white vans.
"Oh - xyz," he said. "I've sent him to xzy - my mistake - he'll be there In A Minute."
If that were true I'd have been able to see the car - it's not that far from me. I think he was caught on the hop by my phone call, and needed an excuse for being late. Makes a change from "he's just round the corner, luv," I suppose.

While I was on the phone, I had to step aside to save my life, as a mammoth BMW turned off the road and slipped into my drive. Huh? "You're not my mini-cab!" No, he said, he's called for "the key," and he was pretending that he had mis-read the house numbers even though it was clear to anyone that all the building was going on next door.
"Is it OK if I stay here for two seconds?"
Yes of course...

At ten past eleven, all was forgiven when MM's car still hadn't shown up and Mr BMW offered me a lift. I hopped in, cancelled the mini-cab, and sat gratefully in a big comfy car that didn't smell of Lynx Africa and Arctic Pine air-fresheners. He also gave me the number of the firm he uses - son does days and father does nights. Family business = less scope for being too clever. The journey home cost £4.80. The usual fare with MM's company is £5.60. Nice knowing you, MM!

So glad your test went smoothly. What an adventure getting there, though! Here's an extra slice of apple pudding. Vanilla sauce...?

(And I don't have a recipe because I've never made it myself. Will ask my Mom, though.)

Lesley! You just hopped into a car with someone you didn't know? Oh dear...I worry about things like that. Well, I actually worry about ALL things! :)

I have Diabetic Retinopathy. Mostly, I see 'floaters' that come, and go. My Opthamologist said that unless they are causing problems driving, or something, the cure is more dangerous. It involves a needle, drawing out the floaters...

I just hopped into a car with someone I didn't know. Oh dear - I did, didn't I? Oh well. Don't tell anyone and I won't do it again. [sniff]

VM, that sounds scary and unpleasant - have you got it under control now? And I think I'm with your Ophthalmologist - leave well enough alone. (((((())))))

Connie, maybe she'll get the recipe and make some we can all share.

V-marrz, I have diabetes too. The first time I saw floaters I made an appointment to see my doctor because I thought I might have a detached retina or something worse. The doctor was pretty mad that I had wasted his time over floaters. Hey, I'm not a doctor and it was better to be safe than sorry.

I was more worried that I had the 'Big Mac' (maculardegeneration). My doctor was very understanding, and made me feel so much better! I'm sorry yours was an A$$, and I hope Lesley, that yours is not!
