You are right of course but nevertheless it is frustrating and I do feel sorry for the kids, they put their heart and souls into it. They usually flash it on in the middle of the Ads, and by the time you realise they are on they are off. A bit rude really.

P.S. And guess what was on the Bakery shelves this morning, Hot Cross Buns. A sad reflection that these celebrations are mainly seen as a money making ploy.

“I wonder if they’d even notice.”
My bet is no.
“I do feel sorry for the kids”
So do I.
“A sad reflection that these celebrations are mainly seen as a money making ploy.”
Couldn’t have said it better.
Just as annoying as cutting off the choir in the middle of a song or whatever is the PBS stations when they do pledge campaigns. Programs that are meant to be two hours (a) get pushed ba ck, and (b) become more like three hour affairs, and people end up missing whatever they wanted to see because it either airs too early or too late (and they need to sleep).

"...they put their heart and souls into it."
Exactly. You wonder sometimes if programme-makers have either.
In the Post Office today were Valentine cards. That's not too bad, only five weeks early. Easter eggs are more than three months early. And to think I was grumbling about the worst examples of Christmas music being played in shops in December.
Happens a lot with sports programmes here. The BBC is pretty good at estimating the duration of a game - match - tournament, and sticking to it, or telling us if programmes are "subject to change" or running however many minutes late.
ITV haven't got a clue. I remember wanting to watch a half-hour programme that was on after a football match. It ended up being cancelled so that the following programmes would be roughly on time. And no, it wasn't because the game went into extra time: it was because the "pundits" couldn't stop talking. Even worse was the infamous occasion when ITV cut to adverts (adverts MUST be shown on time. Programmes can go hang) just as a goal was scored. |

While we are on the subject of TV stations and Ads. I have to confess to being addicted to one particular Soapie that comes on each evening at 4.30 p.m. The number of Ads shown was becoming frustrating so one evening I sat with a timer and recorded times taken. Out of a 30 minute episode we saw 18 minutes of Soapie and 12 minutes of Ads. The Ads ran up to 12 at a time. Mind you it is handy for a pottie break :)

My grandma's birthday was February the 9th and my mum is 19th of December. It's as if buying a card around then isn't allowed as they don't add the others as well, but remove most of the birthday cards as if people are only in love around February. My father's birthday is next week and when I went to get a card yesterday a whole column were Valentines already, that is a record as I've never come across them for his as well before.

I think we have a limit of five minutes on the half hour, and that's bad enough. Twelve isn't funny.
David, I think I've said this before (at least once); it's almost impossible to buy a birthday card in December. I'm sure Hallmark would abolish December birthdays if they could.
Going to see sprog playing in a concert in the wilds of Bedfordshire, then go back to London with him and stay over. Bedford - Leighton Buzzard - Euston - Balham - St Pancras - Bedford. It had better be a good concert! |

That's certainly a trek, Lesley! Know what you mean about December birthdays. My son and two of my close friends have birthdays in December and it's virtually impossible to get a decent card. I've been very organised these past two years and bought them in September/October.

It is a bit. Making use of my railcard before it expires in Feb or before the EU bans them. :(
Yes, I buy cards when I see them! |

As one who has a December Birthday - a fact well known to regulars to Lesley's Blog, I also have a son with a December birthday (like father, like son. Lol), so heartily concur,
The only time one can find a goodly selection of birthday cards in the shops, is when they run out of "special days" (ie when not full of Christmas, Valentines Day, Easter, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, and cousin third time removed day, cards).
As for "Lesley travels", as often the case, conjures up a song......."I've been everywhere man..........", There was/is a British and US version I believe).
TV adverts.......I have come to the conclusion that they time adverts for whatever time I switch on the TV, because it matters not which programme I want to see - the adverts will be on!
Unless of course, I manage to watch something on BBC.......IMO lack of adverts alone makes it worth while watching.

Professer....Hank Snow............magic! One of my all time favorite singers, still have a few of his LP's around the house somewhere!
But.........the British version more in keeping with "Lesley's travels" was done by Rolf Harris I think?

As a December 18th Gal I have to say with all honesty that I have never failed to get a lovely selection of birthday cards on my special day. So I have to believe that my friends and family either buy their cards in advance (like I do) or know where to go. The only thing that amuses me is the tendency of a few of them to send the Christmas card and the birthday card in the one envelope. :)

Well done Prof............that's the one!
Don't know if British names are more difficult, but poor old Rolf Harris seemed to get out of breath a lot more than Hank Snow did!

Love the Hank Snow version!
I looked to see if there was a version with lyrics a little nearer home, and was torn between saying "Oooh look - it mentions Bedford!" and "what's it worth to you for me NOT to post the Rolf Harris version?" but i was too late.
There's an Oz version too:

Meal Saturday was good. At least the food was good. The restaurant has been better. It was an exceptionally cold evening, and there was something wrong with the doors, so too much cold air was getting in. There were a few small plug-in convector heaters but they couldn't keep up with the intake of cold.
Last time we ate in there, we sat upstairs, and it was very warm. We couldn't do that yesterday because upstairs had been booked for a children's Christmas party. It had run at least an hour over time, and the children were running around, stamping, shouting, screaming and crying. We'll know better next time.
But the food and the service were good, and so was the music, so it was worth doing. Same time, same place, next year. |

Thank you Lesley! It was a great day as my daughter and son in law came and took me to my favourite Chinese Restaurant, plus spoilt me rotten with gifts.
