From what you've said he seems pretty thick skinned to me (he came back after some heavy opposition), and would also (like me) probably be happy anyone had even written about him, regardless of the content. I can just imagine him telling everyone at the pub 'Did you know Lesley thinks I'm so fascinating she spent three years writing about me online?'. I think it would probably make his day. It's almost like I know him personally.

As far as irritating people, he better watch his step-irrittate the right person, and he could find himself on the outside looking in.

(I'm starting to scare myself-that doesn't sound like the kind of comment someone as young as 28 or 29 makes!)

| Don't worry, Jazmee, it gets us all in the end! You'll probably say something like that again before you're 120. |

Thanks, Gary - it might be quicker to ask who it hasn't happened to!
Jonathan's always liked my carrot cake, which is not something to do when you're conserving energy, and I've only just started making it again. I gave him one (with the right flour this time) last week, and he's handing it round and tells me that everyone else likes it too. Looks like the carrot cake is back in production. But I need to start making two and keeping one for me. |

| Now there's a thought. I usually just eat it with fingers. Custard was to disguise the fact that I did it wrong. Wouldn't hurt to make it right and have it with custard! Preferably real custard, made with eggs and milk. |

I reckon that upsetting someone in FT is arguably the easiest thing imaginable...........I managed it with one of the first posts I made!

I can send you the recipe, Gary!
Ray, where did that come from? Are you OK?! You're right, it's a doddle. All you need is someone who's always right and knows they're right, or someone who takes everything personally, or someone who thinks everyone's being sarcastic even though most of the time they're not and it's painfully obvious when they are. Light blue touch paper and stand well back.
Want to tell us about it? :) |

Lesley - I was mentioning it as a follow up to Jazmee's 4423.
Easy............it was on the "Who is you favourite American President" thread.
I put "Jefferson Davis"
The person took umbrage at this especially when I pointed out that as he (Jefferson Davis) was both American AND a President, he qualified. The theme might have meant, but never said, UNITED STATES President!

As a follow up..........Mr Davis has long been one of my historical "heros", so much so that my youngest son's middle name is "Jefferson"............AND as may by now be very obvious I have been a "Southern sympathiser" virtually all my life (certainly since I was 11 years old or thereabouts).

I guessed that's what you were responding to, even though Jazmee's post was a warning to Merv to behave, if he ever joined FT!
That was a very nice point you won - sneaky, but nice. I bet you laughed yourself to sleep that day.
Is that thread still there? I seem to remember that it ended up imploding. |

| "Southern sympathiser"? Interesting. Is that PC? doesn't it get taken as tantamount to supporting slavery? |

| No, I found it - about two months after you got here. And then I asked you not to shout. **hangs head in shame** |

Lesley...........as you can see your words about not shouting had little effect, as I still use capitals to emphasise a word!
Probably supporting the South (as did a large chunk of our nation anyhow in the 1860's), is not PC...........sounds like a good enough reason to continue with my allegiance! Lol
I will not go into the "why's and wherefore's" of the dispute, but just say that history is written by the victors and the popular conception is thus often incorrect.
Popular "PC" conception is doubtless why YouTube labelled "Dixie" as "liable to offend".
Yes I enjoyed my little "victory" back then! Lol

As long as you're not shouting at me, :)
Wiki tells us
' Today, "Dixie" is sometimes considered offensive, and its critics link the act of singing it to sympathy for the concept of slavery in the American South. '
and then goes and shows us a hundred-year-old sheet music cover. I suggest that pictures like this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1900sc_SM_Dixie.jpg
have more potential to offend than words ever could.
There can only be victories when someone else decides they're better or clever than us, and attempts to prove it. Sometimes they fail. Nice when that happens. |
