Yep, the picture is offensive, but I don't find anything else about 'Dixie' to be so. The song is perky and patriotic, I think! Am I in trouble, now?;)

The warning could be extended to anyone.
Any comment can be misconstrued as racist and/or supporting slavery
VM-you’re not in trouble unless we say so

VM............this "liable to offend" business came to light on the "Folk Music" thread, where I posted the Bobby Horton version of "Dixie".........it was only after I posted it that I noticed the "liable to offend" tag!
If I had to choose my all time, favourite piece of music/song, then I guess "Dixie" would be it. It never fails to send a thrill through me, and it must be about the only piece of music I know of that can portray "jubilation, defiance and sadness" all depending upon how it is played.
Nuff said!

Btw I didn't find that link particularly "offensive" Lesley - no more than I found the "Black & White Minstrels" offensive when I saw them live at Great Yarmouth! No more than having a girlfriend once who was white South African made me a supporter of apartheid!
As Jazmee says (or implies?), anyone can find offence at nigh anything if they look hard enough!

VM, you're up to three. Hope you'll sleep easy tonight. :)
Goodness that's a big tribute for one song. No, I didn't find it offensive either, when I watched the Black & White Minstrels on the telly. I wondered why the women didn't have to paint their faces black like the men, and that was as far as I got. It's only recently that we have been told that it's offensive. For me, what was wrong with the sheet music cover was that the four men were all made to look borderline retarded. That was unnecessary
"Anyone can find offence at nigh anything if they look hard enough" They can and do.
I went out with a boy whose parents bought the News of the World (affectionately known as the News of the Screws), and it was his mother's Sunday treat. She would settle down in her armchair after Sunday lunch, and read it from cover to cover, pausing now and then to look up and say loudly, "Ooh! have you seen this? It's disgusting!" before reading the article out loud. (The relationship didn't last.)
It's a whole new industry, being offended. Mary Whitehouse spent years looking for things to find offensive, but it's been developed beyond recognition. There's a lot of mileage in taking umbrage! |

I've spent my life unintentionally offending people but tend to find the only thing that offends me is politicians. Everyone else can't do anything to put their views into action but the politicians can actually apply their twisted views to all of us.

| There are also the unelected, with even more twisted views that they apply to us, with much more damaging results. But we're talking about twisted politicians, not politically-inspired menaces, right? |

If it's just words then it's one thing, incitement to commit crimes is not offensive but dangerous. The law knows the line they cross even if they rarely enforce it, but when politicians are offensive they can make laws to force it on everyone. Especially councils. Remember the words you weren't allowed to say in another thread, or converting an attitude against car drivers to building estates with no car parking. The nutcases can talk about such rot but only do much about it when they get elected.

Yes of course. Words are offensive. Being killed more so.
There are a lot of words I can't use in any threads. Good being grown up and being able to talk about what you want, when you want, to whoever you want.
Estates with no car parking? Horror! |

Mentioned the carrot uncake I made, and the custard that the little darling used to rescue it with. Why buy custard powder when you can make it with eggs and milk...
What makes me think he bought powder?
Oh (*optimistic*) you made it?
"No, worse, I bought a carton of ready-made custard."
*sigh* Have I taught him nothing? |

You've taught him how to be resourceful, Lesley :). Mine has recently *discovered* the blender, there's hardly any fruit left even after restocking yesterday :(

Lesley..........being a culinary "Philistine", I have to confess that I adore that ready made custard.....happy to spoon it out of the tin or packet as it is...nothing with it, just the custard.........yummy!

Thanks, Bev, I hadn't thought of it like that. What a nice idea. :)
Ray, how can I resist a recommendation like that?

You just gotta love people: If someone’s looking to be offended, even the most innocent comment will be offensive.
Whether a product is good or not depends on the brand.
